G'morning bar peeps! How is everyone?

It's way too hot out for my liking the past couple days, but I am glad for the sunshine. May just go for a walk as long as I don't boil like an egg.

MsA .. I have a query, is it true that its good for you baby to have a small glass of Guiness once a month whilst pregnant!? Someone told me that it was and I got confused. All I was thinking was, isn't that alcohol? But apparently, the iron in it outways all else ..

Well several European countries have said that 1 glass of wine a week isn't bad , but honestly no one knows what the real " safe" limit is since you'd have to experiment on pregnant women and cause severe birth defects to find out. I personally think no alcohol is the safe course since you can't know for sure given genetics, predisposition, and variations if you're going to cause an effect or not and since the effect is permanent brain damage, emotional problems, birth defects, psychological malformation, and fetal alcohol syndrome.. I'd rather be careful than wrong since it's not like you can take it back or undo the damage if you screw up

As for the iron content... pregnant women take prenatal vitamins with high levels of iron so whatever's in guiness would be pointless and not nutritious at all... someone saying that sounds like they are trying to justify their behavior. There are loads of foods like spinach, red meat, etc that have iron in them ( far more than beer)

I think thats the position I would take too. If there's any chance it could harm the baby I wouldn't do it.

I recently found out that a girl I went to primary school with and haven't seen since we were 11 is pregnant. She's not even 17 yet (I don't think her birthday's that far off tho) and all her status' on facebook read are things like "My life is crap, can't believe I can't drink for another 3 months. I have no life." And all I can think is you don't deserve to be allowed to keep this baby! I mean, she's going to start drinking again as soon as its born, if she breast feeds then that baby's pretty much screwed. I feel bad because I'm laughing at her situation tho. Not the pregnant thing, coz I just feel sorry for that baby, but the fact that she spent 4 months going "I want a boy. Can wait to meet him. He's gonna be just like his dad." and then she found out it was a girl ..

Eurgh, people like that just wind me up tho. She's responsible for this child, and she shouldn't moan about it. If she is that bothered about it, she shouldn't be keeping it. I mean, there are so many people out there who can't have kids who would be such better parents. BAH!

[ / rant]

Sorry, went off on a bit of a tangent there ...

Well it takes an hour for a drink to get out of your system so it's ok for her to drink after the baby is born even if she's breastfeeding so long as she times it so she has a drink at least 2 hours before she nurses... no big. But yes her attitude SUCKS!! But it's one of the reasons having kids before you're ready is a bad idea

All babies should be wanted and loved

HA. a few days ><;; we went from 40 to 82 over night. which just rocked :P lol

WuS: you think that's bad (and yeah, thats an absolutely wonderful attitude to have towards such a beautiful little creation), there's a woman in my town who can't have children, and she just adopted this baby from a drug addicted mother who didn't want her (and wasn't fit to support her anyway). so the baby already had a few problems to deal with, but in this woman's care she's been doing absolutely phenomenal. cut to three months later (i.e. the present), this mentally unstable relative of the mother comes forward and says she wants the baby back. SOMEHOW, by a ruling of absolutely HELLISH quality, the judge ruled in favor of said unfit relative, and theyre taking the baby away.

all i can say is: what the FUCK, batman?

Don't get me started on that one.

I *was* enjoying my time off from work, now I'm emotionally right back at the clinic. AAAAAAAA!!!!!

The chickens are laying eggs. We're going to a friend's house for a birthday party tomorrow. I have people coming over for a while on Monday.

Since Thursday I have gotten the plants in, roughed out an enclosure for the chickens, hung laundry on the line for the first time since October, arranged for summer childcare, gotten a quote on gravel and cement for the driveway, weeded large portions of the gardens, dragged out/sorted/attached the hoses and watered so that plants will live, started work on a shift (sewing), figured out how a dress is put together from video clips, done medieval dancing then gone out to dinner with friends, swabbed out a large cabin on my son's school camping trip and had a lovely drive there and back, baked a fruity thing for the potluck, done the grocery shopping, taken out all my summer clothes, packed away the winter stuff, took a nap, and some other things I'm forgetting.

AND I STILL HAVE THREE MORE DAYS OFF!

Can I stop now?

Ice Tea! I have a craving for some in real life now. :/ Stupid England .. the only place I can get decent Ice Tea includes a 40 min bus journey :/

&& that sucks for the couple who adopted the kid. No one should be able to take it away from them, especially someone so unstable, even if they are a relative.

Anyway, on a lighter topic .. FREE HOUSE x3

They also have a habit of trying to intimidate us by copying in senior site mds and directors to make things happen quicker, forgetting that we fix their machines too (and often their home pcs as well) so they're not big scary people but someone we're on first name terms with.

I had a tiny little surprise this morning.

I was letting the chickens out of the coop for the day, when I realized that the brats who usually camp out overnight hadn't come up to shake me down for food this morning, as is their usual habit.
I went into the machine shed where they tend to roost, to see if they were sleeping in or strewn in a feathery mess across the floor.

(The machine shed is more a rough sketch below waist height at this point, the siding having been negelcted shamefully for forty or so years. I can't keep them in and I can't keep them out, hence the need for building a chicken coop last fall because they were turning into weasel treats.)

I heard a strange noise coming from under some tarps. I recognized it but could not quite place it. Terrified mouse? Demented sparrow? No...

Fluffy butt little chick came out and peeped at me!

SURPRISE!

A hen I'd given up for dead a little while ago had gone broody in amongst the c**p my father's sister is storing in there, gotten a clutch of eggs laid, and is now sitting on at least two chicks with possibly more to follow. Now I am very worried about the hens I'd presumed dead, and the newly not there ones.

I may be up to my arse in chicks within the next week or so unless I manage to hunt them all down.

"Why not just let them hatch?"
Have you ever heard fifteen roosters learning to crow? Not pretty. Plus then I'd just have to kill them all or manage to sell them to someone, which is not as easy as it sounds.

Barkeep! I need a stiff one.

HUGS Rosie so they're definitely roosters.. damn Plus now you have to check all possible hidey holes in or near the coop, round up the chickens, all little peeping fluff balls, and figure a way to sell or get rid of them... nice start to the morning. You definitely need that coop...and a stiff drink.

IMO, You're missing out on a great movie. The actors they choose do great jobs in the roles.

And if it bothers you that much, read below:

It's actually an alternate universe. Spock from the original series did some stuff and ended up sending himself and a baddie through a black hole. Which then changes the entire timeline and characters backstories, such as Kirks reason for joining star fleet and such

it takes everything from the original star trek, throws it out the fucking window, and writes a different story using the lame-ass excuse of "alternate reality" because of some bogus time travel thing (yeah, i know, they did time travel in ST 4: a journey home, but still, really? recycling old ideas?), and i dont give a fuck what reality theyre in,

That, and the Romulans in their little temper tantrum, wiped out the Vulcans, which are a huge part of the Federation, killed Kirk's dad, killed off Spock's mother--WHO MAKES A FUCKING APPEARANCE IN THE ORIGINAL FILMS EXCUSE ME--i could see killing her if she never made an appearance, but she did; then they wiped out the Klingons, who are one of the most frequent villains to the Federation, then Kirk in his infinite "bad-assness" wipes out the Romulans, yet ANOTHER frequent villain of the series--Kirk gets surgery to look like one so he can infiltrate them in one ep, i forget what the central conflict was. So now, you basically have the Borg, who don't even show up in the Kirk universe, but still, really?

The highlight of the film was Scottie, but he unfortunately wasn't in the film for that long as he made a very late entrance *sigh*

my brother agreed, it really just destroyed what was a great series & collection of films. I mean, if you're not familiar with the original star trek, and you saw this star trek, you'd think that's what the original star trek was all about, and it totally isn't. A trekkie, or even just someone who's seen the films and original series, would watch this and go, "um.....no. wrong." they were basically trying to appeal to a new audience with this one, and it made me sad. I didn't really want to see it in the first place, but the bro did, knowing it definitely wouldn't measure up to the originals, and though we're not trekkies (maaaybe closet trekkies, considering we were upset with what Abrams did with this, but then again i get upset when *any* franchise is ruined by an attempt to resurrect a genre/classic) we were pretty bummed. was it good? as a stand-alone, non-affiliated with star trek (i wish) it was a good action flick, even though the individual scenes were better than the whole IMO. ><;;

Kirk only wiped out the Romulans that came through the black hole, not the entire species. I also believe that the Kligons were not wiped out, I think there was something mentioned about a Klingon prison. And again, in this universe none of the stuff that happened in the original movies happened....kinda. So it doesn't matter weather Spocks mom was in one of the movies or fucking Kirk for the entire series. New timeline means new canon.

I am by no means a trekkie, but I am a fan of the series and more than a bit familiar and I loved the new film. There's a thin line with remakes, and I think this one got it right. I am quite looking forward to more movies.

Star Trek was great, and even though it was much different it still honoured the originals just fine. Can't be too picky, it IS supposed to be entertainment. Terminator? Err...well...it hasn't arrived down these parts yet. Transmission has been slow since the demise of Mr U-- err, you know who. Hello everyone! Hope all is well and shiny in your areas.

I haven't slept for 2 days, people. This is not good! I've been downing Bawls (*dirty laugh*) and Red Bull Cola just to function. But I have been catching up on some reading and shows that I've been wanting to see so all is not lost! And I gotta say, True Blood is all kinds of awesome. ^^

Oh and before I post this, to Tex (and I will not bother quoting what was said because it just makes me angry), as a Trekkie and a child of Trekkies I in fact loved the movie and so did my parents. We left there with smiles on our faces, it's been a long time since I've left a movie feeling like that. I could punch a million lil holes into all of what you thought was wrong with the movie, but I won't dignify it with a response. All I have to say is please don't tell someone to not see something just because you have bad opinions. I, for one, go see a movie and judge it on my own merits, and that has opened myself to many awesome movies other people told me were utter crap. So try to keep it to "I didn't like in, myself" period, and save your unfounded ranting for an actual Star Trek discussion thread or forum, thank you muchly.

Ok, I've said my piece. Who wants cake?
