Suddenly Palin's botched Kouric interview is... still retarded

Palin froze when interviewed by Kouric. And everyone laughed.
Obama was interviewed by Leno, and took a low brow jab at the mentally challneged.....silence.
You can't sugar coat Obama's mind set. When he says something, he means it. This power hungry tool of a president is in charge. To quote his favorite pastor
"God bless America..no...God damn America! The chickens will come home to roost"!

Isn't your post kind of a low-brow jab at the Special Olympics, too? After all, aren't YOU calling all the contestants retards, by saying that they're ALL "mentally challneged [sic]"?
Last time I looked, I couldn't sworn that the Special Olympics were for the physically handicapped as well.
So in making your jab at Obama, you've just joined him in the "Ooooops! Aw, FUCK!" club by saying something really stupid that wasn't at all what you meant to say.
Are did you MEAN to say that all Spcial Olympics participants are retards?

Hey, if your on the same page of Obama with the "special" people bashing then I really feel bad for you. It's in the same vein of Date rape, and cancer jokes. The poorest possible taste. You can defend his snide comment all you want, it just shows your character. With all of your "retard" talk it's pretty obvious. Good luck with your soul, your going to need it.

Obama says it, and everything is just peachy. Hell, there are even people on this thread siding with him. That to me is complete, unbridled, blind devotion. In other parts of the country this could be viewed as brainwashing. If Obama ever starts a doomsday cult, these zombies would be the first in line to follow him down. I think you may be pushing it by implying making off-color remarks indicates a sociopath. Now, I'm fairly liberal, but I don't go much for a lot of politicaly correct hysteria. There are a lot of blanket statements that are offensive, and yet have a high percentage of truth to them. Not 100% truth, not very pretty truth, but truth. Do you censure the ones who embody the stereotype or the ones you think are tasteless for pointing it out? Do you deny the truth of anything that can be seen as offensive? Denied truth doesn't become a lie, and so that way is madness.
Sad to say, everyone has some prejudice. It might be slight, it might be almost unnoticable, it might be a guiding force in behavior, it might only be a guiding force when it comes to one group of people, it might be an ingrained and unconscious slip of a common expression, it might be fought off constantly and not always successfully, but I don't believe no one has it. When it comes to, say, the possibility of disease, there is actually a biological coding for it, the immune system sending a signal below the level of thought to avoid people who might have a disease it hasn't encountered and isn't equipped to deal with. It's true, there's been research into that very thing.
So it might not be terribly PC, but it's still true. Am I siding with him? Not particularly. Do I understand? Yes, I have slips myself, being human.
...At least the man can pick up a newspaper, perhaps even noting the name of it.

Ingrained and unconscious slip of a common expression! And, actually, not by definition an incorrect one. The word 'retard' means, essentially, slow. When you're not fast enough to get somewhere on time, you're tardy. When a substance slows the progress of something like, say, fire, it's a retardant. When you're not thinking fast enough and you do something stupid? Well. Now I understand that the word has slipped under the vast umbrella of slang, but technically the term came into being because the mentally handicapped can be... a little slow. Not pretty, not PC, still true.

So, I guess you don't realize how equivocating stupidity and the mentally disabled is insulting, then. In the first place, being mentally disabled is very different from being stupid; in the second place, stupidity is generally a negative trait, which adds to the way that people generally think being "retarded" is a negative trait.
I consider "retard" as pretty much on the same level with "cunt" and "n*gg*r" in terms of how ugly they are, whether or not most people recognize it.

That thing about the Special Olypics was bad, but at least Obama realized what he'd said and apologized not too long after. Palin's interview isn't on the same level - comparing her remarks about Obama "pallin' around with terrorists" would be more apt. And, I don't remember hearing anything about her apologizing for that, although I could be wrong.
The fact that people are defending Obama's remark doesn't sit well with me, though. He recognized that what he said was wrong; why don't they?
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Obama didn't apologize for his remarks until the back lash had already started to come in, and his handlers told him he screwed the pooch.
Palin, despite the poor showing w/ Couric, was 100% right in describing Obama ' pallin' around w/ terrorist '. Because that's EXACTLY what he did with Ayers. I hope she never apologized for that, because she had no reason to do so.
Again, had he KNOWN it was wrong, he'd have known how it sounded, for the PRESIDENT on national t.v. to say such a thing, and quickly asked for forgiveness. He didn't, because he didn't have that kind of awareness, and doesn't actually see this as something for which he needed to apologize.

The way I took it is that he did, indeed, mean for it to be self-deprecating, but the wording he used was poorly chosen off the cuff. There is usually one reason to go on The Tonight Show and that is to joke around with Jay Leno. It may have been okay for Robin Williams or Matt Damon to say that kind of thing (I'm just guessing here, perhaps it wouldn't), but not the sitting President of the United States. Obama was trying to be funny and the joke fell flat. Whether or not he apologized after the furor started is beside the point. He apologized, so that's that.
But this is kind of why a current President has not gone on Leno; because it's unscripted and anything could go awry. And it did. Not a huge gaffe, but a gaffe nonetheless. It's not the kind of thing where he can sit around and get cozy on a couch with an interviewer and not know, for the most part, what he's going to say. It's the same thing, in a way, with the 60 Minutes interview where he was chuckling while talking about how serious the economy is. Gallows humor? I can understand that, but HIS job is to tell us what's happening and help us understand what's going on, not crack jokes on national television. It just didn't look good in a professional sense.

"What are you talking about???"
Hello,
I was commenting that last night, the title of this thread as it appeared on the main/home page was different than the correct title of this thread. I copy and pasted it so you could see. I found it odd.
The title of the thread on the thread listing last night was, "Suddenly Palin's botched Kouric interview is... kind of retarded."
I was wondering about that, because it's very strange that the title of a thread on the main page should be different than the current title of the thread.
There were two possibilities that occurred to me.
1) Someone had hacked/vandalized the site, changing the thread title as it appeared on the main page and thread listing.
2) The person who created the thread initially used one title for the thread, and then switched to a new title. But the listings did not immediately change to reflect that.
While the thread title in all areas now displays correctly, I am puzzled about what occurred. I hope this explains my puzzlement in more detail.

Hello,
First, I should confess my prejudices. I consider a mental handicap to be a generally negative trait. In my estimation, a mental handicap produces quantifiable, measurable deficiencies. These deficiencies are in fact measured, by scientists and doctors, in the process of diagnosing someone with a disability.
That having been said, I do not consider someone with a mental handicap to be 'useless' unless their handicap renders them so. They may still be able to perform ably in the service of their communities and families. Indeed, the Special Olympics exists as proof that tasks can be completed regardless of handicap. If not as well, then at least as vigorously and perhaps with even more enthusiasm.
Now, none of this excuses the idea of using a term for people that they find distasteful. I honestly never gave much thought to the word 'retard' as derogatory to the group in question. In the past few days, the word has been much publicized as an insult by related agencies, and I shall do my best to curb such speech in the future. This will take time. I have used the word often.
Our president did not use the word retard, incidentally. He compared his performance while bowling to that of a Special Olympian. And he did so much more kindly than I have in the past when regarding my own performance.
And so, as I have sinned, I can find little fault with his brief and rapidly recognized gaffe of minor proportions.

I'm with Anthony - I used the word, and OVER-used it, in an attempt to "needle" Hyppo and AuCoward. Clearly I stepped over the line into outright offensiveness to those whom I actually have a great deal of respect for: YinYang, Rue, Signy, and others.
YinYang's points, especially, made me re-think WHY I laugh at Mencia's jokes about the mentally handicapped. I came to the realization that it's more an uncomfortable laugh than it is a "that's funny" laugh. Much like the "porch monkey" scene from Clerks II, it's funny because it's WRONG, and you can't believe that someone is actually saying it out loud.
You will notice, though, that I've said pretty much from the outset that it was a bone-headed remark for Obama to make, that it was a mistake, and that HOPEFULLY some good could come out of it. I still hold to that - my hope is that the Special Olympics will get so much support and money because of this that they won't know how to begin to spend it all. I'm not implying that Obama said what he said in order to shine a light on Special Olympics and MHMR causes, but that out of the bad, some good could still come.
Again, apologies to all, and peace,
Mike

Hello,
On that note, I wonder if I might not comment on something I've noticed since my return to the board.
I took a break from the board because the vitriol seemed rather thick around election time, with many people arguing badly (that is to say, arguing with bad technique) due to their emotional investment in the election results. I estimated that after a short time away, things might settle down again to a low, manageable roar.
But I've noticed as I read posts that certain members of the community are being regularly and openly derided with nicknames such as 'Hippo' and 'AuCoward.'
If we are all to agree that it is polite to call someone by the name that they wish to be called (Hence, not referring to the mentally challenged as 'retards' because they don't like it) then shall we also leave off this new habit of carelessly insulting someone every time we write their name?
It seems akin to the cruel gradeschool games, like calling little Mary Poppins 'Poopyhead Poppins' because you don't like her.
I don't think that we should on the one hand strive to avoid offending one group of people, and on the other hand strive equally hard to purposefully offend other people.
Not to mention that you lose the upper hand of moral superiority when you start calling someone a boogerface, eh?
If we are to best our opponents, we must never dehumanize them, or reduce them to one-dimensional concepts of derision. Even the bad guys are people, a concept which the open-minded amongst us are charged to remember. In fact, 'even the bad guys are people' is often the essential difference of opinion between the so-called 'AuCowards' of the world and the people who oppose them. When we are reduced to name-calling, then the difference between the 'right' side and the 'wrong' side becomes quite difficult to discern.

I'll take this post 1st, as I think it's important.
There's a great t.v. series on History Channel now, ' How the Earth was Made '. But what we have here is ' How a Liberal Lie is made '.
The false premise is first laid down, that being there was ANYONE making fun of "dead Canadian troops". I never did any such thing, not even remotely. The only area where Canadian Troops were even DISCUSSED on this entire forum was the FOX show - Red Eye thread, and comments directed toward the Canadian military taking some time off after its service in Afghanistan. No where in that entire story was ANYTHING said about dead, fallen, injured, wounded Canadian soldiers. The STORY WASN'T ABOUT ANY OF THAT! Another poster, misstressarah, some how added to the story the part of the fallen service men being brought home, but that was COMPLETELY outside the point of what was shown on the Red Eye show.
They weren't talking about the Canadian military in response to, in conjunction with, in addition to, or an ANY way related to the fact that any Canada's fallen heroes were being brought home and laid to rest. MISSTRESSARAHA added that on, HERSELF.
I didn't say it. None of the folks on the Red Eye show remotely dealt with it. It was completely and absolutely outside the context of what was being discussed! There was ZERO connection between the 2 stories. As Kaylee would say... " there just isn't " .
Now, the " making fun of shooting pregnant Palestinian women " comment.

I'm not involved with the SO but I have a disabled person in the family and know many others. I don't use the word 'retard', or crip, or spaz or other such terms either. Personally, I winced a bit with what Obama said. He was only trying to make fun of himself, but it was thoughtless and unintentionally mean.
I contrast that with Bush actively making fun of a person begging for their life (execution), actively deriding a reporter wearing sunglasses (blind), executing the mentally challenged ...

Yes, he executed at least five mentally retarded inmates during his tenure as governor. And he openly mocked Karla Faye Tucker, laughing while he told others how she begged, "Please don't kill me!" Mocking those on Death Row seems a bit beneath the dignity of a sitting Governor or President, wouldn't you say?

Exchange between United States President George W. Bush and journalist Peter Wallsten at White House Rose Garden, June 14, 2006:
PRESIDENT BUSH: Yeah, Peter. You're going to ask that question with those shades on?
PETER WALLSTEN: I can take them off --
BUSH: No, I'm interested in the shade look, seriously here.
WALLSTEN: All right. I'll keep it then.

Peter Wallsten is blind.
So, yeah... Same kind of thing - he was trying to be funny, but came off bone-headed and insensitive, not through intentional maliciousness, but rather just a simple screw-up.

So, yes, it certainly seems as though you're telling her to "lighten up, eh" in regards to their fallen soldiers being brought home - AND in regards to Fox making fun of their military, saying things like "it's time to invade that ridiculous country".
So, yeah - it sure seems like you were poking fun at Canada and Mistress's sadness over her fallen heroes. "Hey, it's all light-hearted fun! Lighten up, eh?" It comes across as pretty crass and bone-headed.

The "On Fire" Economy -
The Dow closed at 10,587.60 on January 20, 2001, the day GW Bush took office. Eight years later, it closed below 8000 on the day he left office - a net loss of 25%. That's what conservatives call an economic "success".

No, you just reposted it under YOUR handle, one presumes as an expression of what YOU support.
No outrage, faux or otherwise - just tacit acceptance and active dissemination - by you.

Got it ?
And you just showed you're being a troll, and nothing else.
You are no longer a part of any serious conversation here. Dismissed.

The U.S. economy WAS on fire under Bush, for 6 years. Until the Democrats took control of Congress. It's been all down hill since then.

So, thanks to Mike we all have the quote:
"When Pal women start dressing up their babies in suicide pampers, might be a good idea to go ahead and take care of both of them at once, before they have a chance to kill."
Tell us you didn't type this. Tell us you didn't mean it. Tell us you didn't advocate killing babies. Tell us you are OUTRAGED !! over this.
C'mon. I dare you.

No, not even remotely. She didn't 'end' the post w/ her outrage over the Red Eye cracking on the Canadian military, SHE STARTED WITH IT!!

Sorry, flat out wrong again. It wasn't FOX, but the HOST of the show. He was commenting on the absurdity of a nation's military taking a vacation, and that the only way the could even DO such a thing would be if they had us as their next door neighbor, the most powerful military in the world.
I'll not waste any more time on this. I've dressed down the misguided and misplaced outrage.
Why are we still talking about this ? There's nothing to discuss!

Another one of those stubborn 'truth' things. While I commend you in every way possible, I'm getting the impression that the stubborn, unpretty truths are to be diligently ignored until they go away. Oh, wait, they're too stubborn to go away, so they'll have to be ignored for perpetuity. The term 'mental retardation' which was no doubt first chosen to avoid the more insulting 'slow' while meaning the same thing will doubtless be replaced by another term, longer and more complicated, until people figure out it means essentially the same thing and the process starts all over again so no one will take offense.

Hello River,
On the one hand, it does seem our society has a way of renaming things to obscure meanings and to serve the politics of the day. That is lamentable.
On the other hand, people have every right to choose the name that they will be called. It is rude to ignore their preferences. It is on this basis that I seek to change my ways.
