Where have all the characters gone? :(

Ya know, at the beginning of Season 5, there was a whopping amount of characters, and they continue to wittle away.

Season 5:
Buffy
Xander
Willow
Riley
Dawn
Anya
Spike
Giles

And:
Tara
Joyce

Basically 10. Okay, end of S6:

Buffy
Xander
Dawn
Anya
Willow
Spike

Riley! Giles! Tara! Joyce!
And all the recurring characters we love are showing up anymore, besides the troika, this year we had Halfrek and Clem. What about the characters back in S1-S3, mostly every ep had many recurrers in them to look forward to.

sry for the rant.
My point is that the characters continue to wittle away throughout the years, without the adding of new ones. Besides new addition Dawn, the newest character added was Tara 2.5 years ago!

What I'd like to see is a male friend for Xander. Yeah, I know he has a fine ammount of friends, but there has been an absense of male bonding in Xander's life (Jesse? They didn't seem like they were that close, anyway).

Keep in mind that most of the recurring characters from S1-S3 have since died or went off to college. Snyder died, Jenny Calendar died, that football player died (the one who was a "White Hat" in the "The Wish" universe), Harmony died (speaking of which, it's been almost a year since we've heard from her), Jonathan was a main character in S6, Faith is in prison, etc, etc, and I think you get the point

I agree with you that there should be another character introduced, though it's a big risk to tamper with the Scooby Gang (just remember Riley... blegh), especially this late in the game. (By the way, I think Clem and Xander would be compatible friends... and I think Clem would fit well in the Scooby Gang... I just love Clem, can you tell?)

Clem's great, but they introduced ANya and Tara into the scoobs ok. What about on Angel? They add a new regular every season.

S1: Wes (well half way but still, ya know)
S2: Gunn
S3: Fred
S4: Connor

Toobad The Host wasn't added. I wonder how many eps he'll be gone for until his happy return.

So they pared back a little. This is a tightly-written show, without all the secondary arcs you see on a lot of "ensemble" shows. Which I like. And which gets hard to do when you have a big cast, all clamoring for their share of screen time.
