First, your gay black friend can't see it as an intrusion into his personal life, as nothing about his personal life has been infringed upon. He can choose, if he wants, the civil union route, but he's got no RIGHT to "marry" another man. I'm sorry, but the construct of marriage, 1 man + 1 woman, is far more important than gays feelings of wanting acceptance, which is all this is about. Marriage, which by it's very definition means a man and a woman , committing to each other and resulting in children is something which predates religion and may very well be a pillar of civilization itself, setting us apart from the animal kingdom. Rare is the case where a man and woman can't have children, and for that reason , there's no cause to change what they enter into, for its basic design still holds true. Under no circumstance in nature can a same sex union ever bear children, thus it should be referred to as something else entirely. Doesn't mean they can't be joined, committed, and be seen as such, but don't call it marriage. Because it's not a marriage.
Don't know why you segued off to the " war " topic, as we're winning the war in Iraq, and the main stream media refuses to report on ANY of that here. Best you stick to 1 topic per thread.

I believe that Gays (aka Slys) should have the same rights to marry and be miserable as anyone else. Besides, what's the big sanctimonious deal with marriage anyway?
50% of marriages end in divorce, many becoming nasty, bitter battles over property and children's custody.
25% of those staying in the marriage are miserably unhappy.
25% of marriages work out for the long term.
With batting averages like that, who would want to get married anyhow? Lawyers, that's who! They're the ones who always profit at the expense of other's misery.

Why would they want to get married anyways? I'm straight and I have no desire. I've lived through my parents trying that crap out. It's purely a "grass is greener" thing.
Bottom line is, if a church doesn't want to allow a marriage, the government has no damn place forcing them to acknowledge it. There's so many gays out there, they should just put an end to it and make a church of their own which allows marriage and be done with it. Better yet, stop calling them civil unions and let the gays marry at the courthouse. I don't really give a shit, as long as the Government doesn't overstep its boundaries and start forcing churches to marry them.
What is the big fucking deal from both sides anyways? Aren't there more important issues out there today? Grow up, all of you.
