secondies!
Hey all! I'm here for a moment before I go to bed! I can't believe I'm second on this thread!
Oh guess what? I actually saw a ball and chain in an antique shop in Tunbridge Wells recently!! I didn't have my camera with me so I couldn't photoraph it! (I know - it's like me leaving the house with no shoes on, but it's true... left it at home...)
Anyway - it's so cool to be around for the start of a thread... are we pondering or just chilling and wondering how the hell I am going to afford to go to D*C and someone's wedding in Nevada December!
Love you guys!

Take away
Take away
Take away this ball and chain
'Cuz I'm sick and I'm tired
And I can't take any more pain...
Yeah, this was the problem before now. Feels fuckin' better than I thought.

It'll have to wait till a week on Saturday for me, still at my parents this weekend (*shudders at the mental image*)
Bleugh! Work sucks. Why can't I be paid to doss around with friends, sleeping in and having fun for more than a couple of weeks a year? Yes, that would be good.
Oh well, still have a few weeks till we get the new students so time to do a bit of prep.
I have some fun topics to teach this year!

Thanks everyone for your happy thoughts. Yes everyone can have their own drink martinis naked day. Okay so heres what I did today. I went and got electricity transfered into my name. Here's the wierd part when I called and asked the price they quoated me nearly two hundred dollars but when I went to the local office the charge was zero yay! Then I went to the post office and got my very own mail box. More yay! I feel like a little adult now. Moving is a lot of work.

I'm off home after failing miserably to do much work today (at one point I actually put my head down on the desk and fell asleep for half an hour! That will come back to bite me on the ass when term starts and I'm not ready!)
So sorry to hear of the evil pneumonia FMF. Hope the lungs start behaving soon.
Much love to my best rhyming friend,

Maybe a few hugs
Would help kill the bugs?
If so, you'll soon be on the mend!

Saturday morning. Especially if I don't have to wake up at any particular time. When I wake up on my own I'm usually much more well rested than if I get up to an alarm clock.

MsB wins the "Most Duplicated Post Ever" Award! We need a certificate! Her mind's eye is sufficently pulped, I would say.
And on the ponder, the best morning is when the whole family wakes up and are in good moods, and we lounge on my bed playing and laughing. The other would be waking up the wife and having some carnal fun.

It must have been a result of the Nvidia video card in the server melting down trying to create a pic of Zeek sans pj's eating cold pizza on a Saturday afternoon.

"Good Morning"... is an oxymoron!
Heh... good morning for me is when I get to sleep in AND actually feel rested (alot of times I oversleep, making me feel tired), eat some pizza for breakfast AND not screw up on the microwave time (I can never remember just how long it takes to cook pizza, so I'm eternally guessing), read a good book that I'm actually in the mood to read while eating, instead of just reading whatever, and then come to the comp and finding people actually in the chat and feeling chatty instead of being dead, and fff.net buzzing with interesting posts with plenty for me to respond to. Also if I can pinpoint the song that I *actually* want to listen to... yeah, that's my perfect morning. lolz, yes I AM picky

I keep thinking about my plan to make money before D*C and how much it sucks. As it sets I have enough money for everything I need to do but the business I've been doing is paying, barely. I've had about a 2% profit margin and it is just not satisfying. Just impatient and can't wait to get more stuff sold.
Too much stuff and too little time.

Fine I'll get the ball rolling on a ponder that has plenty of potential to explode into argument.
Ponder: Is Zeek pure evil?
Reason: A really nice lady at work found out this week that her sister has cancer and it's apparently in an advanced stage. The sister has no health insurance because she runs her own wallpapering "business" it's really just her. Anyway she's all upset that there isn't some free healthcare to take care of her and get her surgery and everything. To me that's the risk she was running. She took a job she enjoyed but didn't afford health care. She was saying her own happiness was worth more than her health to her and now it's time to pay the piper. I don't deny that it's sad, but it's the way the world works. If I didn't want to be financially secure I certainly wouldn't work a job that takes up as much of my time and effort as the one I work now. I just think it's BS to say that there should be free healthcare to take care of this lady.
Am I evil for thinking that?
NOTIFY: N | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Um ok then I must be evil too..'cause there are several companies out ther that ofer reasonable ( about $75-100 a month) health insurance to self employed and temporarily uninsured. I know 'cause I am using one right now to cover the gap between my last job's insurance ending and my new job's insurance starting. If I had chosen to not get temp health insurance and I got sick, I'd think it was my own supid fault for not getting insurance. So while it's really sad this woman is sick, she could easily have procured insurance for herself while she worked her own business. She made the choice not to get insurance and that sucks for her... I am not unsympathetic , but it's a bit like people who get a job without retirement benefits and don't put anything into savings or into a 401K and then getting all upset that they don't have retirement...( note to all even if it's like $20 a month start a 401K right now!!!)
However I do think this country needs to get on the universal health care wagon.. it's ridiculous that we have to choose to work unfulfilling jobs, or sacrafice huge chunks of our paychecks in order to take care of basic needs like medical care. Every other civilized country has universal health care and yes their taxes are higher, but hey if you consider how much it costs employers to provide benefits and how much workers pay for them, it'd even otu right quick:) Plus those snotty insurance companies wouldn't be raking in billions per year ( almost as irritating as watching the record profits of the oil companies increase every quarter)

Well, evil or not. I just want to eat lunch.
ADD: Had to explain to one of our boys the reasons why sexual comments and getures are not acceptable within the shelter. Really sucks when you have to tell a kid that statistically half the girls under the age of 15 later report that they were sexually molested or assaulted by this age. I did like telling him about the guys in PC ward and how they, if put in general population are favorites with their cellies.
Say it with me now... bitch.

Is it self defense to tear someone's head off when you ask them if they took care of the issue you emailed them about a week ago and they say, "Oh I think I deleted that without reading it. Was I supposed to do something?"? He's threatening my sanity. Isn't that a good enough self defensish reason? "Oops well if you forward that to me I can do the 5 second task now...too bad you still have to rerun a bunch of programs that will take hours and make you work late on a Friday cause I was a jackass." *^$%#

Interesting health care ponder.
We tend to take the National Health Service for granted in the UK, and bitch about it when it is slow/ dirty/ not very advanced, but I have to say I am glad we have it. Even if it does take a bite out of my pay cheque, it's just one less thing to worry about! I would so be one of those people who forgets to renew and then get into trouble.

Good morning peoples.
Had to change a tire on the Jeep this morning 'cause some (can't think of any other derrogatory name other than F-A-G) person didn't poloce their brass. There was a 7.62x39 (commonly used in AK's like the one I had) cartridge stuck in the left rear tire. I did learn where the jack and such is for the Jeep so at least it was a learning experience.
That is to good thing about machines Zeek. We can cuss them until the end of time and can never be charged with abuse. Now if we could only abuse the dumb asses who screw them up.

If I had chosen to not get temp health insurance and I got sick, I'd think it was my own supid fault for not getting insurance. So while it's really sad this woman is sick, she could easily have procured insurance for herself while she worked her own business.
Hate to be the voice of dissent, but getting an individual policy is nothing like getting a temporary policy. A temporary policy doesn't go through underwriting the way an individual policy does. A single maintenance prescription or any type of on-going issue, no matter how insignificant issue (allergies, anyone?) will exclude you from getting an individual policy. It really isn't an easy process.
I've seen situations like the one Zeek mentioned happen a lot. It really is unfortunate, but it's not always avoidable. Sure, this person could've possibly found an employer that offered health benefits, but even small employers are struggling to keep health and welfare programs in place. A lot of them are having to cancel their programs because they can't afford even the required minimum percentage of the premium payment.

It may be inexpensive...that doesn't mean someone can qualify for it. Individual plans are notoriously hard to qualify for. You must be in near perfect health. The underwriting process is extensive and there are three tiers of risk that are acceptable. The price above is no doubt for the best risk category. If you are on a maintenance type medication, you will be flat out denied.
If someone is self-employed in an industry that has a trust, they may be able to be a part of that trust and get insurance through them. Otherwise, they better hope they are HEALTHY and can make it through underwriting.

Better prepared may or may not have played into this scenario. It's possible that even if she was better prepared, she still wouldn't have qualified. I talk to many people every week who are taken in by the rates they hear for individual coverage. They would rather pay $87/month over the $200 or so that pay for group coverage. 'course that is before they go through individual underwriting and are either rated up or denied. Group cover is much more extensive than individual, doesn't usually carry the same exclusions and limitations not to mention deductible issues.

Yeah it defintiely sucks... we so need universal health care.. Assurant isn't as picky about the pre-exisitings 'cause they insured my sis in law and she has MS ( it was a bit more expensive, but they did it)
Health care bites... and like I said no one should have to choose between bills and going to the doctor.

Wowzers. I took a look at those plans and let's just say they are crap. The least expensive plan for me is $180.41/month and has a $3500 deductible (everything, including office visits, is subject to the deductible which means you really have no coverage until you hit that deductible), it has a 50% co-insurance (um, ouch), and the OOP is $5500, so with the 50% co-insurance, you should pretty much plan on paying $5500 a year + the $180/month premium.
To make this plan even slightly resemble a group plan, it would cost around $465.60/month (similar to or more expensive than a group plan premiums and that still has a maternity exclusion). That doesn't even bring up if there are enough providers in your area to keep you on the 'in-network' benefit level. I can tell you without a doubt that Assurant does not have a provider panel in this area.
Yes, it's coverage, but it's crappy coverage, in my professional and not-so-humble opinion. Sorry to get all tetchy about it, but it's what I do all day long and to say someone could get coverage cheaply is really selling the situation short.

Wow you are much better at research than I am Rugbug ( of course you're a pro) yeah it's crappy, but if there's nothing else available it's a possible alternative to COBRA ( which is hideously expensive to the tune of ...if memory serves $758 per month which is what I meant by cheaply... not that Assurant was cheap, just that it was tons cheaper than alternatives) Still all in all it's not good no matter what. Even if you have an employer with insurance it's still costing you and your employer tons of money for a service you use infrequently... we really need national health care

I still worry about national healthcare too. Don't you think the government will regulate costs to death and make is so that the hospitals struggle to make money? I pretty much imagine our healthcare system taking a turn to be like our education system. Not enough money to provide good service.
If the money dries up then the gifted people will find a different profession to pursue and we'll be stuck with lack luster medical care for all. That doesn't seem like a good alternative either.

well, for a while the AT control unit has been wonky, randomly shutting itself off so i have to shift manually, which wasnt a problem, except when it stopped shifting into third and fourth every time it shut off. so we (me and the bf) got a new unit, and we just put it in today. transmission now works fine, shifts on its own, but the D4 light doesnt stay steady on like its supposed to, it blinks constantly. we can't figure out why it's blinking.
tried shorting the little whatchathing plug near the comp, which allows the comp to output an error code, and it gives us an error code 10 and the check engine light comes on (note, check engine light is OFF when the car is just running, no code check).
now error code 10 means the temperature sensor is bad, but that has nothing to do with the transmission, which should be the only reason the D4 light blinks at all when the car is running. so we're stumped. :-P

Well if anyone can figure it out NV can... he's got mad skills when it comes to fixing and building ( very talented in so many ways)
HUSG FLT I am sorry the car's all wonky
Zeek...hmm well at this point we already have lackluster medical care 'cause most people can't afford it and the medicare system is bogging down. I think what it'll do is drive down med school costs and eventually even out. Sure it won't be Costa Rica, but hey England's nice( or at least better than what we have now)

MSB, I was curious because what I know of individual insurance tells me it's may be cheap...but if so, it's not good coverage.
And yes, COBRA can be expensive, especially when someone is used to an employer picking up a hefty sum of the premium. Realizing that while you paid $300 for family coverage, your employer paid $1000 for you to have that coverage and ythat ou'll be expected to pay the full $1300 plus a 2% or 10% (based on group size) administration fee while on COBRA, can be schocking.

I'm not completely sure what a nat'l healthcare system would look like, but I would guess that there would be a bigger line drawn in the healthcare sand. Right now, if you are insured, you can get just about any kind of (traditional) treatment. For example, my boss' 92 year-old MIL would had surgery for brain cancer. I think stuff like that will stop. 92 and they're doing brain surgery because 'why not, it's paid for.' America is so afraid of death we've gone above and beyond providing realistic healthcare. I think guidelines would become stricter. I wouldn't mind seeing that. Have knee problems and weigh 300 lbs? Maybe try dieting before you do the knee replacement. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc...same thing. (and this is coming from someone medicated for high cholesterol...I have significant genetic markers and diet did little (brought it down about 10 points...to just under 400
). I think the responsibility for being as healthy as possible will be put back in the hands of the people. I'm all for personal responsibility. One of the biggest problems with universal healthcare is that urgent issues are handled well, but elective situations (knee replacement, etc) often face significant waits. MUCH longer than we do here.
