It's available for download from his website http://dreamcafe.com/firefly.html under a creative commons license. Let's see if we can keep it busy, without crashing it.

Steven Brust is a professional writer, but this is an unapproved work. I heard there's word on Whedonesque that this may be a proposal for a tie-in novel.

Just read the first paragraph and had to comment that this looks really good. Thanks for the heads up.

New York Times Bestselling Author Steven Brust wrote his Firefly novel because he loves Firefly/Serenity.

He explains it somewhere in the beginning of his his live journal page.

He promised that if he was not able to get it published, he would release it as fanfiction. And he has. Whoo-hoo!

His next book in the Vlad Taltos series is being released July 8, 2008

Keep reading, cause it's good all the way through. I know it is not likely to happen, but it would be nice if this would spark Joss into allowing others to publish stories in the 'verse, officially that is, bound and printed and on bookstore shelves.

. . . and with cover art. Don't forget the cover art.

Hey there, Easy; how you doin'?

It isn't just up to Joss. For some time after the movie, Universal had rights, with Joss's approval, to publish a movie tie-in (which they did) plus two other novels set in the 'verse. I don't know if that is still in effect. If Universal's publishing rights have lapsed, they revert to 20th Century Fox.

Just finished reading it. Excellent stuff. Jayne didn't exactly come across in the best light, but otherwise I loved it. River was spot on.

I think Jayne was well characterised.

What wasn't as good was that he lived.

Apart from a few small nitpicks, it was a really good fic. Well written.

Brust slipped his own little ep in quite nicely, I thought.
Continuity maintained and he got it spot on.

I love Brust's stuff, and he was one of the few writers I felt could be trusted to get it right. I'm so happy he told this little tale.
(It's also kinda cool to know one of your favorite authors is a Browncoat who's probably just as rabid as you...)

Thanks for the tip, Ano (may I call you Ano? Or do you prefer Mous?)

I also intended to post Steven's link on Firefly Talk, for their fanfic review, but can't remember my password. That may still happen but, in case I don't get a round toit, now @least Kev will be sure to spot it in the news section.
