Hard-scifi is a tough sell then a more Fantasy element comes in and fills a role
There was so much to pick from in 1990s - 2000s
After the greats so classic Trek, Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, Farscape, Firefly.
There was still good film and tv being made, Blade Runner 2049, Monsters vs. Aliens, Arrival, District 9, WALL-E some of the Superhero comicbook stuff is ok for example 'Logan',
also Intersteller, Moon, Rogue One, The Martian
South Koreans have some scifi shows but movies and tv are not the same since Covid and now with SJW islamo feminist politics destroying film and tv
the British tried to ruin Dr Who
people also watch stuff like Black Mirror or the Japan toon Steins Gate, scifi survives
it is also kind of dead now as the comicbook bubble burst

It's all about out of control budgets too...
I don't know how you put that genie back in the bottle.
People have been bombarded with expensive CGI for so long now that they expect it and aren't going to go out and see movies if its not there. Especially in Sci-Fi/Fantasy movies. And it's not like practical effects are cheap to make in current year either. Everything costs so much. Especially the labor.
I think it's one of the reasons that the Horror genre is doing so well in 2023. Because of the nature of good horror where "less is more", and they typically go with no-name or C and D list actors, they can make movies on really cheap budgets without a lot of special effects, using classic film tricks that have been around for decades. A lot of horror can be filmed in only one or just a few locations too, where your big-budget sci-fi and fantasy fare usually require filming in many different locations.
The budgets are gone. Not only because of how much money most of the major studios are losing in recent years, but because the economy is being flushed down the tubes, the venture capital has dried up and the results of the writer's strike has now made it obscenely expensive to even write the movies and shows anymore.
Out of 600 TV shows that were greenlit before the writer's strike, 300 of those TV shows were already cancelled. I'm going to guess that there's more to come.
The writers that do still get work are going to be paid more for the work, but a whole lot less of them are going to have jobs going forward and they're going to need to find other jobs.
