Wash stands there uncomfortably. He glances over at River and waves at her awkwardly.

Wash does a classic doubletake which would make Charlie Chaplin green with envy if he hadn't been in black and white.
"Beggin' yer pardon, Sir. But why me?" Then Wash points at River, "and why HER? I mean it's pretty blatantly obvious even to her that she's a few udders shy of a cow. And did we learn NOTHING from Niska? Last time you and I teamed up we both got electrocuted and you lost an ear."
