I would have to guess that the deck gun was probably designed to be used in space. Mal probably used the same entry point that Jubal Early did. Since there's no wind resistance in space, it probably wouldn't have been too difficult.

All brass cased firearms can be considered to be designed to fire in space, and unless "Vera" was a gun designed to fire caseless ammunition, I suspect we caught the crew in a discrepancy. I honestly don’t know if caseless ammo can be fired in space or not since it is possible there is a pocket of air in the middle of the glue & powder casing.

There are guns that can fire under water and guns that can fire in the vacuum of space but like all things in life the initial spark gets the fire going but unless you have an oxidizer mixed in to the propellant (like solid rocket fuel or space munitions
) you only go so far with little power, what those in the military call a "pop no kick".

I have my own theory on how Reavers function.
They are berserkers.
In battle they go into a blood rage like ancient Vikings but they are able to maintain a level of discipline when not on attack. They are still demented and twisted, but can communicate and perform semi-complex tasks.
Because of the small number of people affected by the Pax, they could of already had an enhanced rage mechanism, so most of them would of not been from the scientific or intellectual communities. They could have some who can maintain equipment, build simple machines and even navigate spaceships but civilization as we know it is now alien to them.
Has anyone noticed the only energy weapon reavers used is the EMP that was used by the ship pursuing Serenity? But they do fashion weapons that throw saw blades, nail balls and tranquilizer darts as well as an interesting assortment of bladed weapons.
Another thing that got me about reaver inconsistencies is the episode 'Bushwacked.' Ship of 14 families attacked, no blood anywhere, just some skinned bodies hung up by a chain in a locked store room and a cunning trap for any rescuers. Guess the one left alive could of cleaned up the mess, but the lack of blood probably was more for censors than for lack of detail.
