-Danny

and every time I play with passion I start breaking strings,
and my voice cracks when I sing from my heart
guess that's the price I've got to pay to know that I'm alive
this melody is tearing me apart

Besides, "if wishes were horses" is a very old expression. It's supposed to go, "If wishes were horses then beggars would ride," but Jayne, or Jayne's momma, mixed it up with another one.

Actually the final episode of Angel, as where this quote is taken, was filmed in 2003/2004 (Aired may 2004, not sure when they actually write and shoot the eps). Firefly aired in 2002. So you could say that Spike quoted Jayne, or that joss borrowed lovingly from his other works.
It is also a colloquialism, so it could've been inadvertent as well.

Like was already said, it's an old, old expression. Spike also uses it at least one other time in S5, in "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco", when he comes in and overhears Gunn talking about his new super-lawyer knowledge:

Quote:

S: "Isn't that special? We've all got special powers. Anybody wanna trade? I'll swap you, two for one. Walking thru walls, picking up mugs... in exchange for, oh, I don't know--how about me not being dead?"

A: "How about you not being here?"

S: "If wishes were horses."

FWIW, both "The Cautionary Tale" and "Not Fade Away" were written by the same guy: Jeffrey Bell.

Very keen obsrevation. I remember Illyria's line, but had forgotten Spike's reply.

Rewatching Angel and Buffy after Firefly was cancelled, I saw numerous quotes that were either reused through the show it came from or in either of the other 2 shows.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

How much would we love to see Jayne and Spike mixin' it in a bar? (Not 'Torchwood' style!)

I am now having a truly horrible vision, of 'Serenity' acquiring a new pilot...
