Just discovered the works of Hard SF writer Peter Watts (You can download them for free!)...

...and his latest book, Blindsight, involves astronauts being genetically-engineered for long space voyages with the resurrected vampire gene.
He's apparently a Joss fan, 'cause he named the vampire genus H. sapiens whedonum! 
He even created a mock PowerPoint presentation...

It's very long and gets very technical, but there's also a lot of very understated humor.
