Finn,
I'm not trying to be picky but I can see exceptions to this: "Voicing pleasure at the death of another human being whose only crime is not agreeing with you or sharing your religious views comes across as pretty assholish to me."

Big difference between "not agreeing" and the hate-mongering he was responsible for.
But you just go right back to feeling superior. Jerry'd be proud.
"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."

Quote:Yes, there is. I don’t agree with Jerry Falwell but I’m not happy he’s dead. Finding pleasure in his death, that’s hateful. Evidently, you and Falwell may have a lot more in common then you realize. We’ll all die eventually, and even though I find your opinion detestable, I wouldn’t find any pleasure in your death because of it.

Millions of people got duped by Jerry Falwell and people like him. They should have known that he was just a snake oil salesman. He put on a good show so I've heard, and millions of people believed they got something out of it. It appears that him attacking gays, blacks, and liberal ideas was what got him into the lime-light, and made him very popular, so he alone isn't the blame.
All the people who watched him funded him and his ministry, and then they find that when the smoke clears he's just a dirty old bird like you and me....How dare he?
Con artists have used religion to gain money and prestige for hundreds, maybe even thousands of years. We shouldn't be pointing our fingers at Jerry and saying what a bad man he was. We should be pointing the finger at all the people who funded him over the years. Also, I hate to break it to you but "hate" pays. If you can get people to believe that God hates a particular group or idea, that's money in the bank. BTW, racism also pays, and pays, and pays. Figure out a way to prove that even though God created blacks, he hates them, and I bet you a thousand bucks THAT particular religion would become popular in short order.
I think I need to work on a hate speech and start my own ministry. I'm thinking of picking on people who shop at Walmart. This is a sign that they are agents of the Antichrist.

I was going to wait three days before commenting...
I guess having commentary on your life and death is one of the prices one pays for fame. I'd agree on three days of silence out of respect, but that doesn't fit our sound-bite world now does it?
Not cleaving to any one religious dogma myself I believe in karma and reincarnation. If you believe in these two mechanisms then you must also understand that you cannot judge the karmic weight of an action based solely on what you know from this life. Any act, no matter how apparently reprehensible could just be balancing karma from a previous life. I'd like to believe that the harm one does in this life is balancing harm one received from others in previous lives.
As far as being a fly on the wall when Falwell finally meets his maker I can only hope and pray that God says; "I love you." as he would to any sheep returning to the flock. After all, forgiveness is given for the asking.
Falwell may have harmed others in this life, he may have encouraged others to hate, but don't we ask God to forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us?

dogs.
In case you haven't noticed, it doesn't take much to get us to hate some thing or some one; we didn't, or don't need Falwell for that; the hate was already there...Falwell just gave it a face and a direction, and as far as asking God to forgive us of our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us...good luck on that one buddy. I think you forget what planet we are on.

"even though I find your opinion detestable, I wouldn’t find any pleasure in your death because of it"
How about relief at the death of others? There are evil people in the world who never hurt a fly but teach and incite others to hate and hurt. And when they die, it feels like relief.

I've been thinking about this some. If Jesus was alive today he'd be writing Falwell's secret sins in the dust to shame him out of self-righteousness.

Quote:It doesn’t matter how you whitewash it. It is hatred of a man for his religious beliefs. That’s what it comes down to. Whether one describes it as pleasure or relief, in the end, it is gratification over someone’s death simply because one doesn’t agree with his religious views. If we were talking about someone whose actions had hurt other people, such as the case of Saddam Hussein, I would be inclined to agree with you, but I refuse to accept that someone’s religious views alone should make them such a source of hatred that anyone would find relief in their death.
