Independent Army Brigade for D*C

Hi, there.
I have been bouncing an idea around about building an Independent Soldier costume...since seeing the pilot episode and The Message, I decided that I really like the outfit, and think it would be a good addition to my collection. I have seen several people (a few in here, too) that have put one of these together, and they look good.
Marching in the parade at D*C, I noticed the Stormtroopers (who could avoid them, eh?) and thought that it would be shiny to have several people in the "uniform" of the Independents. There was one woman that I saw that had a wonderful costume....if anyone knows who she is, please let me know!
Ok, to the meat...I am planning on putting together a complete outfit; buying what I can and building the rest. I would like to offer the patterns I find to whoever else would like to be part of this, but I will also offer to build what I can for those that want them. I'm trying not to create my own group or anything like that...just want to put my limited skills and overabundant enthusiasm to a good cause.
I went ahead and posted this thread because a few of us are already talking back and forth...I figured it would be nicer to keep this in one place rather then bother all heck out of everyone else. 
So, anyone else out there interested?

Definately fill me in. If (and I hate to jinx it by saying if) I make it I'd love to have something a bit different from everyone else to wear.

Well, you already know I'm in, but I thought I would throw in my hat nonetheless.
I would be of the variety that would just get you to build whatever needed building and then buying the rest.
I think that we can give the 501st a real run for their money (maybe not this year, but one can hope), though we are going to need a good name ourownselves (I am partial to the Balls & Bayonetes Brigade ).
I suppose I have already said this, but I will re-iterate: let me know what I can do to help in this endeavor, as I am all for it.

sounds shiny, I too will be attending next year :)
I was planning on marching as a companion, though I could be persuaded to carry a , " I supported unification" sign or dressing the part of a browncoat :)
I bet if you got enough folks together you could get a discount on helmets etc.

I forgot to add, if we can get patterns for the alliance uniforms as well the purple bellies could be marching us browncoats outta serenity valley, we could have our own U-day reenactment.
Just a thought.
But I am very much in, there did not seem to be a true browncoat uniform other than brown was the overwhelmingly popular color. I think the costumes would be cheap and easy to make or even put together from thrift store finds.
My bro was the reaver last year.

RIMG, good to see you here, too! I really think the medic thing is a good idea. I have a few of those ice packs around here somewhere, as well as quite a bit of scrap leather for bags.
I'm going to try to spend a few minutes and get some screen caps posted here so y'all can see what I mean.
ArtCat, good to see you in here, too! I think you would make a wonderful Companion! I'll see about getting those signs made.
I had a chance to chat with your brother before the parade...his costume was great!
I realize there was a lot of diversity in the "uniform", but I have managed to see a few common items on the grunts...red vest with stitched-on brown lines (not sure exactly what those meant), brown overcoat (I am going to model my design after the one Mal had), pants (again, Mal's pattented 'tight pants'), and the main firearm was a H&K G36 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heckler_&_Koch_G36)
The airsoft version of this can be found all over eBay.

Alright, a few screencaps found at Still Flying and placed in photobucket. These give a pretty good idea of the general "costume". Several of the soldiers have what appears to be mail on their arms. I say appear because it does not flow right for steel mail...I don't think I'll incorporate this into the outfit, as I am way out of practice as far as making mail goes...
So, the photos:
Mal is NOT carrying a G36 here...I think this is some French assault rifle...
And a good shot of the main weapon. It looks like a carbine version of the G36.
Comments, additions...anyone know something I am missing? I know there are more photos of these out there...I'll be looking at the deleted scenes tonight. Does anyone know of a site out there with good, clear photos of these costumes?

Is there a particular helmet style you noticed on the Browncoats? I'm assuming that they were using steel helmets (Just because it's grittier). As cool as it would be for us to all have MICH TC-2000's, it'd be costly and probably detract from the "feel" of a Browncoat.
I'm guessing/voting for the good ol' M1 design. I have one in my room, although it's a little bit big on me.
Just as a suggestion, and something I'm doing myself ASAP, I think that between the visual companion, and possibly, the Serenity Role Playing Game handbook, we could probably get very organized and detailed descriptions on what we should be wearing, depending on who we're trying to represent.
I'll show up as a Browncoat if that's the idea everyone's going for, but if there's a large enough following behind the Alliance idea, well, I've never turned down an opportunity to be the bad guy.

Sportmens Guide and a few others offer repro helmets and the like at great prices. I'm off to lunch. I'll try to dig up a few catalogs if I make it home.

I don't know a lot about the helmets...there's a good shot of the one Tracey had on...hang on...
To my eyes, that looks like a WWII-era helmet...but like I said, I do not know for sure. You have any idea what that is?
I think I'd like to stick with the Independents...although I think creating Alliance outfits would also be pretty shiny. No! No more sewing projects! I'd have to quit my real job!
I had forgotten the Visual Guide...I know there are some original drawings in those. Thank you!
I do think I would like to create the costumes of a brigade not yet torn up; newer-looking with just a hint of wear. Kind of like they may have been before it started going bad. Pretty coats, pretty vests, shiny equipment...as the years go by at D*C, we can age our look accordingly!
