Because Halloween is a filthy, hedonistic holiday that comes from the devil, didn't you know?
I'm sorry, we shouldn't be having religious rants here, but it's a bit of a sore spot of me, not only that a perfectly wonderful Pagan day of power would be seen as 'of the devil' but also how hysterical people have been getting, esspecially since... around 2000 or so. Would you say that's about right? I think that's about right.
Certain people are trying to turn this country fanatically Christian and it's working. Fight the power. Dance nekkid

Yay for the nekkid dancing, and fighting the power (says the gov't employee).
I think it is ironic and hypocritical that they classify it as the 'devil's work', or even as a pagan holiday, when the major Christian holidays come from pagan holidays as well. If you are going to look at the past and the origins of a day, you need to look at all of them, not just the ones that are convienient.

Yet another halloween with no trick or treaters. Why don't they come to the apartments? Guess I'll have to eat the bowl of candy. The only costumes I got to see were on the girls at our local hootersesque bbq restaurant. Not that I'm complaining about those
Oh well. I'll still always be prepared with candy. And little do the kids know if they knocked on my door they'd be getting like half the bowl since no one else was going to claim any.

I live in a tiny country town called Damascus in the state of Maryland. The two biggest resources we have here are cops and churches. In fact, I live right across the streets (as in, I look out my front window and I'm starring right at it) from an all-black Methodist church, which is the sister church of the Methodist church I go to about a mile towards town. There's a Baptist church, a Catholic, an Episcopalian and a Lutheran just off the top of my head. I ain't seen a single one of them condemning Halloween, and in fact, the night before last, my little sister was going to a haunted house for Youth Night at the Methodist church. Just in case any of you pagans got a bad opinion of Christianity, even my tiny-backwater town is very accepting of people's beleifs.
I'd say the most oppressive institution in this town is, realistically, the High School football team, who are admittedly a bunch of shitheads.

Place my body on a ship and burn it on the sea,
Let my spirit rise, Valkiries carry me.
Take me to Valhalla where my brothers wait for me.
Fires burn into the sky, my spirit will never die.

Devil's Day? Um...no. This is the day when the boundaries between this world and the next are touching, and can be crossed by the denizens of both planes.

Mavouneen: I really hope you find your bird soon, here's something to cheer you up
well, I had exactly 0 trick or treaters last night. I was actually quite disappointed, I had my water gun primed and ready at the window over the front door, but then Hallowe'en isn't as big here as it is over there.
So, stolen of my super-soaker based fun, I completed the rest of my hallowe'en ritual and watched Ravenous
best horror/thriller movie ever!!
By the way, how do you get your own original signature picture in the top left of your post?

And yes, I'm very aware that Pagan hollidays were hijacked, but Halloween is one of the few that wasn't. It isn't a 'Christian' Holiday, it isn't even a National holiday. So more and more, hysterical people get, well, hysterical about it.
Although not in Spain or Mexico. *shrug*
