Actually, I think you've hit the nail on the head right there. The 'real' reason that "soccer" isn't popular in the US is because it doesn't lend itself to the kind of heavy ad-spot volume that "football", baseball, basketball or hockey do. I love "soccer" because it's a fast-paced game even if it isn't "high scoring" and I've never bought that it's "too boring" for American audiences. I think it's the Networks and Advertisers that continue to ignore it because they don't stand to make as much cash.

I also think part of the problem lies with the fact that Americans hate the idea of not having a winning team. We don't like being second-rate at anything and our men's team, while getting stronger, isn't shooting to the top. (Our women's team, on the other hand . . .but let's face it, in our sexist society that doesn't matter)

You can say that again i think 100% of the world plays football even though it might not be their first national sport.

Do you give it a stupid new haircut every three months? Does it have a brown/orange partner? Have you had any long term problems with its metatarsals?

Every few years the American proposals for football surface their heads: "Bigger goals! Divide the match into quarters! No goalkeepers!" and they are politely debated and discussed and then the Americans are thanked for their time and leave the boardroom, which mysteriously bursts into laughter on their departure.

Oh, I don't know. I just heard one of my co-workers today wonder out loud how I could stand to watch a game that's "two hours that ends in a scoreless tie." Some Americans are still unenlightened and DO think it's "too boring." I wish they'd give it a real chance. I had trouble enjoying it until I learned more about what I'm watching, and now I can appreciate the fantastic moves made by the players, even if they don't always result in a goal. Of course, I'm also a baseball fan and a lot of Americans think that's boring, too.

I guess it's their loss. I'll be watching, though!

I find it somewhat boring was well, about the only time I watch it is during the World Cup, or the few times the MLS is on the Ocho on those slow sports days. I need a reaso to watch and the World Cup is more than enough reason, even if we do suck.

And if I am not mistaken, many of our players play for European teams. So we can't be that bad.

I apologise to footy fans (Aussies and others (AFL)) but i really hate the game, the season drives me nuts, im not much of and american football fan either, runnin up a field to put a ball on the ground never appealed to me and im aware im treading dangerous waters here (sorry), but soccer/football i dont really mind, prefer to play than watch but i gotta say Australia's win over Japan was awesome!
