Glad to hear it - I'm a big fan of Buffy and Angel (that's why I tuned into Firefly in the first place, even though it didn't appeal that much to me)
Although Angel has had its fair share of dud episodes, I think that it was on the whole a lot more enjoyable than Buffy. But hey, that's me.
I loved the first season because it very mcuh had that Batman/Detective vibe, plus the vast majority of them were standalones, unlike the heavy serialised nature of later seasons.
My favourite episodes from season 1 (to look out for) were "City of" (possibly the greatest pilot episode ever created), "Hero", "Somnambulist", "Five by Five/Sanctuary" (a crossover with a Buffy season 4 two parter), "Blind Date" and the excellent finale "To Shanshu in LA"
