I agree.

Also, it makes the fanfic better. I've read by far the best fanfic I've ever seen on this site--exporations of the Shepherd's past, Inara's, Mal's...potential Inara/Mal 'ships, Jayne/Kaylee, Mal/River...looks into the society of Reavers...all of these would have been impossible had the canon covered the topics they explore.

I'd still rather have the series, but it is worth noting.
