If you're looking for information on my series, go below and look at MY 'VERSE. Otherwise, now read on ... I was PM'd a while back, asking if I thought my new character of Freya was a 'Mary Sue'. Not knowing the phrase (I'm English, although I'm not sure that's an excuse!) I did a little research, and have lately seen a fair amount of traffic on the threads about this too. And this is the result. Honestly, I don't think you can write a pleasant (as in not a villain) original character and not have some aspects of that character relate to being a 'Mary Sue'. If you look at great literature (and I am not suggesting, even in my wildest, alcohol-induced moments - if I drank - that I write great literature!) all the great female characters from Jane Eyre to Bridget Jones have aspects that the author either likes in themselves, or wishes they have. It goes just the same for the male characters, too. Does Freya have characteristics that I admire? Of course. Do I want to go through what I've put her through to get them? Hell, no! I've tried to write the canon characters as we've seen them, keeping to the actors' interpretations, their style of speaking, moving, the descriptions of their mannerisms, their clothes ... but beyond the BDM is all my own. And I'm proud of it. Is Freya a 'Mary Sue'? I don't know. And if she is, is that a bad thing? People have been commenting in the threads that they won't read fanfic if there is an OC, or what they consider to be an MS. Come on guys, you could be missing some great stuff out there! At least try it out! Okay ... that's my rant done. For the rest of you who do read, apparently enjoy and comment, thank you very much. I need it like Serenity needs Kaylee.

... Your brother-in-law calls you up, all in tears on how miserable his life is (and, for a change, he's one of the people who can rightfully claim that) and you're thinking "boy, what would one of our most favorite characters now say or do to make him feel better?". It's even more creepy when you come up with a solution that actually works. I'm in an artistic mood. Maybe I'll sit down later and write a poem for him. Something to cheer him up. Unfortunatly I'm neither a music-creating type nor one that is any good with graphics, so words will have to do. Now I'm just waiting for inspiration to hit me. Once I got a title it'll be all fine. Also I think I'm in need of a banner for my signature. *ponders* Only I can't make up my mind yet on what I actually want. And I think I should know that before even thinking about asking one of my fellow browncoats to make me one (see above, the part where I suck in graphics *g*). Ah, and one last thing: Jordi got here! Most people won't know who or what that is. It's a what. But it doesn't have its name by chance: Think Geordy LaForge and then you've got a rough idea why I need it and what it's doing for me. If got till monday to try it out all the way. Shiny!

So my friend's birthday was a few days ago... my other friend and I decided to split Firefly for her and I said I'd buy it. The first Barnes and Noble we went to to find it had no DVDs (as it was a very small B&N), but the friendly helpful salesperson there said, "We don't have any DVDs here, but I'm curious. Which DVD are you looking for?" We told him Firefly and he flipped out! "Oh! I LOVE Firefly! It's such a good show...." etc. So we stopped at another B&N and Firefly wasn't there (I had memorized the spot in the DVD section where it usually is). So we asked a friendly helpful salesperson (who happened to look a bit like Ben Kingsley) where it was and he showed us the Featured DVDs shelf and said, "You know, I just finished watching Firefly. It's such a good show! It's a shame it got canceled." etc etc. My mother was in shock because she thought that no one liked Firefly. All I could say was "I told you so!!!" :wink: My friend ended up screaming when she opened her present. Very loudly.

Monty Python was on TV the past week (Holy grail, meaning of life, the live performance, life of brian was probably aired too but I missed it). *Sigh* The brits have perfected the art of silly. I am glad it is being kept alive with the likes of Little britain. Shame there isn't more Yes Minister (cerebral) brit humour around. Black books has a brain, but no real social commentary (great to watch all the same). Dead ringers is hillarious (look up "Dead Ringers Bush" on youtube. Fan-bloody-tastic! I especially love the Bush & Blair joint press conference) And those that are yet to see "Red Dwarf" find it! Watch it! You'll LOVE it! I got out my red dwarf DVDs the other day after watching python on TV as I felt like more good british humour (although red dwarf is definitely a different style of brit humour to python). I think I may have to dust off The Goodies dvds too, havent seen it in a while. Brilliant, brilliant show... but do I watch Kung-Fu Kapers (Ecky Thump!), South Africa (A great take on the stupidity of racism and aparteid) or Scatty Safari (The Existence of Rolf Harris) hehe, "it was the beards they were after". Weekdays have their perks. Can't justify going out (have to go to work the next morning) but a couple of DVDs are entirely acceptable :biggrin:
