Progress
Friday, 03 February 2006 00:35:16

I was off work today and spend a lot of time editing the tango vid again. It is now about 3/4 done, so I hope to finish it tomorrow. I had a hard time with the soundfiles. The video software cannot cut them exactly to the frame when they are in mp3 format (probably because of the compression, I don't know if audio compression uses something like key frames, but that would explain some of my trouble). I downloaded the lame encoder (another amazingly great open source initiative...

2X2
My own T-Shirts....
Friday, 03 February 2006 01:51:10

I went and bought some Silk Screening Textile Inks the other day and decided to give silk screening a try... I ended up buying a sheer curtain to use as the screen, and made the frame out of a 2x2 (snicker) that I had laying around. I bought a squeegee thingy at the dollar store, and some white glue, and I was in business.... So far, I've made two shirts... I did a TG Freight shirt, using a method where you trace the image on the screen, and then fill in the areas you don't want to print with the white glue... this resulted in some very imprecise lines that were not crisp enough for the letters and symbols unfortunately, but it's passabel for my first attempt. The second shirt I did is of a sihouette of Serenity in black, with the chinese characters for "serenity" in red over top.. I really like the design and this time I used a paper stencil which gave me much much more crisp lines. Since this was a two colour silk screen, I had to cut out two stencils, one for the ship, with the space for the characters left un printed, and then one for just the characters... unfortunately, I wasn't able to cut them out exactly perfect, so they didn't 100% match up, but I still think it looks pretty cool... I'll post some pictures as soon as I get them off the camera... I must say it's totally addictive... I have plans for alll sort of Serenity/Firely t-shirts... Naturally, I'll have to do a Blue Sun one ;o) It's extremely easy, and the results are quite acceptable.. I'm having a blast!

Preliminary blog

Most first blogs are abominable. I am going to try and avoid that here. I don't think it will be too hard, as another site I spend a great deal of time at chewed me up and spit me out for being...well... a troll. A painful but effective learning experience.

Serenity on Vu (w/bonus)
Friday, 03 February 2006 04:16:42

So I was flipping through the satellite programming guide and, as usual not paying any attention to the pay per view options, when I see something that catches my eye. Could it be? Yep, Serenity is on Vu! "An action-packed thriler! A brother and sister are both on the run from a corrupt alliance." Also comes with a bonus: the 'On the Set' featurette. I don't think that was on the North American DVD. Now I have to decide if it's worth the $3.99 or whatever it is. It must be a new addition - I haven't seen any adds for it and Bell tends to advertise its pay per view stuff pretty heavily. Just nice to see the movie out there.

Tax Refund Rampage, Part Two
Friday, 03 February 2006 15:10:38

Huzzah! Got the remainder of my tax refund deposited into my account when I got home from work this morning. Now, I've promised to try and save a sizeable chunk of it this time so I won't be kicking myself three or four months down the road when the money starts getting tight again. At the same time, however, I consider my tax with-holdings to be a little savings account that I only get to access once a year. An Alliance-mandated piggy bank, if you will. So, now that I've broken my little piggy for the year, it's only fitting that I have a little bit of fun with it before handing the remainder off to the bank to be squandered. So... already have the Firefly boxed set, and the BDM. That goes without saying. And today I've just come back from amazon.com and ordered both soundtracks (I know, you can't beat the tv show soundtrack, but there's a number of scores that I really liked from the movie, too. Lacked some of the western stuff, but still pretty gorram good, really.) Also picked up the Visual Companion and Finding Serenity (I always need good bath-room reading and I can't go ro sleep without a good book. I've been working through David Drakes Lord of the Isles books, but lately I've really been yearning for some more Firefly during my quality time atop the porcelain god.) Almost thought about picking up the action figures, but... well, Mal looks kinda wonky, and I know any money I put into the Firefly franchise helps the cause, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. There just don't seem to be the amount of love put into those that I've come to associate with our beloved 'verse. Also, almost picked up the Serenity graphic novel while I was at amazon, but I remember seeing out here about the signed copies of the comic by the cast. So I might hold out for that. Nice autographed edition of one of the issues might round things out nicely, and I can always pick up the TPB later on. (Little disappointed that my local Schuler's wasn't carrying it... let's just say it's probably good the staff there don't know much conversational chinese. ;) So I just gotta decide who's autograph I really want the most, and hope that that one's still in stock. Probably sleep on that one. cause it's a tought choice, I have trouble picking a favorite character anyways, and I can't really justify getting a whole set of signed editions... though that'd be especially shiny. Also, too lazy to check back on the site right now, but I know I've seen a Blue Sun coffee mug one of the sites, and I just HAVE to have one of those. Support the fellow browncoats and all. No point here. Just very much excited to finally round out my collection. Shiny shiny day.

... and then another two and a half months without a post or log entry because ... well, I guess everything's just going too well. I figured it out. I need things to complain about. I was posting like crazy last year because I was saddled with a crappy job and the stress of my wife being pregnant with our first child. Now, I've got a job I absolutely love, a no-longer-pregnant wife and a healthy 7-month old boy. Everything is (knock on wood) going so well that I have nothing to complain about too much, therefore rendering this site's log system a little less useful to me. I've never been too good at writing logs about things that are going well in my life. That, plus I got in a big rut on my fanfic and there's no new Firefly-related stuff on the horizon so ... Wait. I can complain about that.
