Edit: there may be slight spoilers. Consider yourself warned. To start, I'm just going to say that I'm not trying to start any fights (which is why I'm putting this in a flylog and not starting a thread) but I'm going to speak my mind here before I end up replying to a post somewhere and regretting it later. This is a rant. You have been warned. Standard ranting rules apply  First we get a trailer. And people are upset. I can't even remember why now. I think it had something to do with 'not appealing to the general non-browncoated public' (although a trailer in April for a little-known movie in September is probably for the fans anyway.) Then we get a poster. And people are upset. Doesn't represent the movie (which most of us haven't seen) yadda yadda yadda. I liked it. It's hanging in my room. Then there is another poster (the Australian one). And people are upset. Too apocalyptic. Too martial-arty. Then there are the tv ads. Not enough explaining. Too much explaining. Too funny. Not funny enough. Then we get the movie. And people are upset. Too many deaths. The wrong deaths. Not enough Inara. Not enough Kaylee. Not enough River. Not enough Mal. Not enough Wash. Not enough Book. Not enough Jayne. Not enough Simon. Not enough Zoe. Not enough Serenity (the ship). It's not Firefly. It's too Firefly. And now the DVD. There are petitions against the DVD art. And for the inclusion of several episodes of Firefly (I actually thought that one was a joke at first). And there are demands that the deleted scenes be put in (although this came from a poster who is showing definite troll-like tendencies). I think I've made my point. And I don't necessarily disagree. I think there were flaws in the promotion (the tv ads in particular). And I'm not saying people shouldn't feel free to like and dislike things. Go ahead, I have no right to tell you how to feel. What I find tiresome though is that it seems that from the very beginning, some people have never been happy. Everything is wrong and the fans are the only ones who know what is right and that if the fans demand something be done, it should be done. It just feels like this weird 'entitlement' thing has sprung up. I can't describe it, but I see it everytime I see a new thread demanding Universal/Joss change something (and it's not just here. I made the mistake of going to the 'versal board and was left with this feeling :banghead:). Does everyone need their own complaint thread? And their own petition? And to hate everything. I'm not in love with the DVD art. But I don't really care. I want the DVD. And if this is the art it's going to have for a December release then bring it on. I know a lot of what I've said may anger some. But I had to say it. I'm not trying to offend, I just don't get it. We should enjoy what we have, not dwell on what we dislike. End rant.

This is going to be a long blog spread over a few entries so if you want the short version: I went to Australia, my brother got married, I made it safely home. Oh and drinking games are fun when you know the rules. Even in the long version, I'm skipping to when I left Sydney. It was a 9.45 flight to Noosa and there had been a bit of dispute between my brother and his fiance about exactly how much time they needed to leave spare before getting to the airport. Rob wanted to arrive just before check-in closed, Rachel wanted to be there shortly after the airport opened. We reached a suitable compromise but unfortuantely a) Rob and I took the first taxi on our own as other three girls were still getting ready and b) the flight got delayed for three hours. This was not a good start. We eventually arrived, slightly grumpy, at the Sunshine Coast airport and got ready to pile into the hired car when the next unfortunate incident happened. Perhaps some explanation is necessary. Rachel is a great planner of things and had organised pretty much everything to do with the wedding from the flowers on the table to the musicians at the ceremony. Rob had one job: car hire. Unfortunately, he wasn't that specific about the car he wanted and so we all stood in front of this bright yellow, big spoilered, custom exhaust boy racer. Rachel was not impressed. But finally we made it to our villas. I was staying with my parents, aunt and uncle, cousin and her backpacking friend. We thought our place was outstanding, what with it backing onto a river, there being a boat in the drive, a glorious main room, etc, etc. That was until we had seen where Rob and Rach were staying: it could easily have turned up in the pages of Hello magazine or Cribs. It had this huge door that Lurch would have been very at home answering plus an even better view, a bar, an ice machine, an awesome TV room... just palatial really. Still, you only get married once. We had a very nice BBQ with a lot of guests in attendence, spoiled slightly for me by the fact that I crashed out after a couple of hours with jetlag. Hadn't really been affected before then so it was a bit surprising. Didn't matter too much because finally, after 9 days in Australia, I was about to go sunbathing for the first time. Well, the first time that involved any actual sunshine. To be continued...

Ah sunlight. Where would be without it? Well, not in existence apparently but I'm more referring to the process whereby we smear a combination of oil and water all over ourselves and lie in the light, hoping to turn our skin a slightly darker colour. Magical. Such opportunities having been unavailable to me in the UK (and Sydney come to that), I eagerly bounded out to absorb some rays. Lovely. I'd like to say Monday was more daring and exciting than that but no. It was just me in sunshine. The following day however was slightly more interesting as we decided to go to Australia Zoo. This was actually founded by Steve "Crikey!" Irwin's father and now Steve and his wife own and run it. It's rather impressive, what with a very hands on approach to animals (koalas and kangaroos both there to be stroked), plus a presentation every day of the animals in the Crocoseum (sponsored by an interminable number of companies). They showed snakes, tigers, birds and crocodiles , although the highlight was definitely in the bird section. This huge eagle came out, soaring across the stadium, flying from one side to the other onto the zoo keeper's outstretched arms. Except for the time that he rather overshot and had to land on the next obvious perch which happened to be the shoulder of a five year old girl who naturally enough screamed and cried her head off. What was particularly peculiar was the way the presenter carried on talking, reassuring that it was just a bit windy and the eagle had gotten a bit off course. Well, duh. He also offered to take the child out with the bird later, just one on one. As though that child was ever going to want to do anything but run in fear from all birds from now on. Not everyday you get to see someone's childhood trauma take place (although I'd probably recommend the circus as the best place to do so. Clowns. *shudders*) After that, it was back home to catch some more sun and then have a little wander around the local neighbourhood. The real fun was set for tomorrow. A quick word about my brother: mean. A long word about my brother: malevolent. Or maybe machiavellian. Basically there were people at the wedding who had flown the 12,000 miles specfically to take their revenge upon him. He had already had one stag weekend but on Wednesday it was time for a bonus one. He was very fortunate in his choice of wife in that people who knew her were aware that she would track, hunt and kill anyone who derailed the ceremony so that meant no shaved heads, eyebrows or dumping in the middle of the countryside while wearing a bunny costume. However, we were allowed to take him out for a drink. First of all we went out to Sunshine beach, a most glorious stretch of land reaching pretty much as far as you could see. We set up a game of beach cricket but to make things more interesting, we gave Robert a woman's hat, shirt and skirt to wear. He was still a better cricketer than me even in that getup. Bah. Anyway, we played in the sand for a while, then the water (which had such a huge tidal pull, we had to get out and walk across the beach to stop ourselves being dragged all the way along the shore) then finally to the local lifeguard institution which seemed to be mostly used as a pub. We then regrouped back in town for a few drinking games. My brother is a master of drinking games (you may know thumb master, head master, surf master, freeze master, drink while you think, fizz buzz, among many others) and normally uses this knowledge to crucify all those he plays with. However this time, it was 14 against one. Two hours in and he was much the worse for wear, certainly not helped when my uncle pulled Rob's hat over his head and pretended to be steering him like a go-kart. You can imagine how pleasent that is while drunk. After that, karaoke. My family has roughly two tones between us in our singing voices so you can imagine the horror as Robert was summoned again and again to sing for our (and the crowd's) entertainment. I think his rendition of Dancing Queen will take some suppressing. One of Rob's mates
