So, I just finished a good chunk of writing this freaking term paper. I guess I'm realizing its crunch time; meaning, i stop most other extra -curricular activities except for drinking after projects get done, and wretching on the back of the porch. Sorry, too much info. I know this paper sucks. It's not atrocious, but its mediocre to the point of falling somewhere between crap-tacular and pure drivel. It was supposed to be about the invasions/occupations of the Roman, Germanic, and Norse peoples regarding the History of English language. Unfortunately it lacked the "epiphany" type sense of arrival I was hoping to get at. Nothing in my research yielded anything close to what I was hoping to find. Not that I put so much stock in writing essays for class I'm gonna fall over with grief. I'm gonna have to start tearing stuff out of symbols and turn it into paper, like the lady says. Anyway, I have this urge to watch season 7 Buffy ep's, which i normally reserve for summer weekends and spring break type deals. Comfort viewing no doubt. Andrew's video ep. was stellar.

[rant] Everything went wrong today at work. The main server died, a client died, a tournament went unsanctioned, my pizza's cold!!! and I think I've gone insane. [/rant] On the upside, things are now somewhat back to normal, after cannibalizing my own computer to get the server back up and running.

Thwarting the usual monday grogginess with A.M. AM humor, I pushed the downs this morning even further away with caffiene and breakfast on the road. Then I walked through the main lobby of one of the buildings on campus and realized there's no time like the quiet of the morning. One could say the weather was almost balmy today. These winters here in Indiana are becoming mild. I hope I'm not speaking too soon. What, this isn't banal enough for ya? Eat it. :finger: One of these years I'm gonna have time to finally sit down and write that album I keep thinking of - the lo-fi one with plenty of track bouncing and obscure lyrics. Until then I have to finish school and find a job, amongst other things. And I love you, I love you all.

Thanksgiving was a wonderful experience this year...a bit odd without a wife beside me, but it was nice to be able to host my family at my house. We of course ate way too much and ended up in a food coma, but it was worth it! I realized again how thankful I was that I was introduced to Firefly, and that I found this site. Time for the sappy part...I love my Browncoat family, and I am very thankful for each and every one of you! You have made life a brighter place! Now to the Independent Army stuff. This was an idea I had been tossing around, and when finally prodded into making a post, I was quite pleased with the results! Apparently, I am not the only one interested in this concept. For those that don't know, this is what I mean:

For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated with names and their meanings. As a kid I whiled away endless hours reading those mugs and keyrings you can buy with a person's name and a witty poem about its meaning. I've even bought baby name books just so I can look up a name's meaning whenever the mood strikes me. Not that you can always trust a baby name book. Just about every book and website translates Linda as "pretty." Which it is... in Spanish, but that's not where the name comes from. Linda actually comes from the Germanic, and translates as "snake!" Naturally most books go for the "nicer" translation over the more accurate one, and to be fair most parents take the name with the Spanish translation in mind. Or so my Mum swears anyway. Still, learning my own name's meaning gave me an interest in accurately translating the names of others. Mal's name is particularly interesting. As River mentioned before, the word "mal" itself means "bad" in Latin. The full name, Malcolm, is Celtic and is usually translated as "disciple of Saint Columba." Nothing much interesting about that, you'd think, even if Columba was a bit more colourful than the average Saint. But once again the books and websites miss out on something important - they don't translate Columba's own name. Columba, or "Colm" in modern Ireland, means "dove." Which means that Mal's name translates literally as "follower of the dove." And the dove, of course, is an almost universal symbol for peace and has been for centuries. So Mal, a man stuck in a war he lost years ago, unable to stop fighting, has a name that describes searching for peace - following the dove. Not that I'm saying for a second that Joss knew about this, but it's damn interesting all the same. If you're me, anyway.
