What about you?
Monday, 26 September 2005 01:14:44

Alright, I read about troll country, and I only just found out how many there were. I was going to post a ranting blog, but that would take up blog space. If you want to, please feel free to tell what trolls have done to you. This blog is for those who have been hurt by them. I myself have heard horrible things from them, such as how horrible Firefly is and that Serenity will flop, and I don't want to hear anything like it ever again. Just my two cents, thanks for reading if you did...

Mini Serenity Trailer

I just tried my hand at making some trailer and came out with two interesting ones. For a mini trailer (no sound) that shows a combination of stills and motion shots check this out.

Bi-polar days, the shiny and the not so much...
Monday, 26 September 2005 08:36:09

(*rant and language ahead warning* - you have been warned.) My day? Bi-fuckin'-polar I tell you. Anthony and I had a bit of a spat last night, stupid couple stuff, but it made me feel pretty upset, and I lay awake for a bit, but finally fell asleep at about 3amish... only to be woken at 3.30 by Anthony "someone has broken into our cars". Fuck. So, yeah, our cars were broken into over night. Nothing was stolen (nothing valuable, anyway, I had a CD or two in the glove box, but that I can replace). But shit fuck. Anyways, so the police (who had been called to a car break in up the street and had cruised the street only to find our house with it's *four* cars broken into and then wake us) tell us that the fingerprinting people want to go over the cars all over so we can't actually use them until they do. Fine. Early in the morning, in daylight, we discover that they'd totally bitch fucked the door locks on my car and even if the CSI-"I screwed my last assignment and now I'm on stolen feckin' car detail"-lackeys showed up they couldn't get back inside (the other cars are fine, by the way, it's just mine, of course), so we had to call a car locksmith to come fix the locks. Then my nephews were dropped off and I had a ball with them. It's school holidays and I promised them a great day, but as we couldn't use the cars and had to wait for the police, I had to improvise with staying at the house. I couldn't even take them out to a restaraunt lunch like I told them I would (it's Kyle's 9th bday tomorrow and gah, a feckin' *lunch* is all I ask). On the upside, we played the game of life. Oh. My. God. If ever you want hysterics play this game with a 7 and 9 year old. They were delighted by every single aspect of the game, the concept of insurance (life, fire, car) was fascinating to them ("if I die they give my family money? That's so *COOL*!!!"), the idea of 'pay day' was just brilliant. The hilarity of naming little pink wives and then, later, little pink babies was unforgettable (our Game Of Life only came with little pink people, it's an entirely lesbian game, I think one of the factory line workers is subversive). The concept of shares, speculating on stock exchanges... Liam, the 7 yr old, won money for selling a TV series, which I made him make a proposal for ("it's about people who go down deep into the ocean and kill sharks, I'm calling it SHARK KILLERS!"). Later, the 9 yr old had to give money to charity, who to? ("The sharks, I'm trying to stop them getting killed on TV"). And the 7 yr old was very impressed with himself when I made him work out his speen of the wheel times his status symbol ("I own a yacht? Cool!") Then we played monopoly, which was great fun, but less imaginative. I love my nephews, I really do. And, somehow, they picked up the word 'confuzzled' from me. After the games, my mum went to get pizza because we still couldn't leave, the CSI-"I screwed my boss' wife and now I'm stuck dusting your car, feck it, maybe I'll see if she's home alone today..."-guys hadn't come. Then we played some football and my Serenity Visual Guide and Comic #3 were delivered!! Wooo!! I so totally made them jealous over the movie, 'cause they looked through the book and were mighty impressed. But I told them it was rated M. They can't see it yet. But if they were good I'd show them a preview for it, I did, the 7 minute one, and they were all "Woahhhhhhhhhh!" and "Coooooooool!". And can't wait to be 15 so they can see it. Heh. Pre-emptive browncoat-ing, I tell you. And you know what? It's now 6.30 pm and I'm still stuck here because the fingerprint guys AREN"T HERE YET. Before lunch my sweet aunt fanny. Well, to be fair, the police didn't exactly say *which* lunch, but that doesn't really help me as I have to go to work tomorrow. Sorry 'bout the rant. So... yeah, the upshot: nephews = hella shiny. police and car thieves = gorram tamade hundans. EDIT: You want an update? So, we finally gave up on the cop dudes and decided to check the car out. And the IGNITION was totally messed u

BIG DAMN COLLEGE!!!

Hey heroes... Sittin' at a desk, in a college, supposed to be doing a computer course...but the lure of this big damn site was just too shiny... Next chapter of Twice As Nice is almost finished, but not quite No real reason i'm writing this, just bored and when i get bored, i get all itchy for a keyboard...or i get hungry, but whatever - minor details bother me not *sigh* I'm helping out at an open evening at my school tonight (ah, the joys of being a prefect). Translation: I get to sit in a deserted library for two hours while lost people ask me where the toilets are...I can't wait. BIG DAMN COLLEGE!!! Mark II
Monday, 26 September 2005 14:31:13

Almost forgot, I SAW THE SERENITY TRAILER!!! True, I missed most of it 'cause first, Lisa was talking to me, then I turned round to see Jayne looking at me. So, naturally, I jumped and started screaming my pretty little head off...and as a result missed most of the trailer. Though I did see River looking at something in the bridge, then Mal said something, so River drew a big damn gun and Mal said something about talking...I now watch the ads between stuff like a hawk. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WASH DOESN'T DIE IN THE BDM!!! PLEASE!!! only 11 days 'til the BDM comes to Scotland!!! YAY!!! my parents just had to live in Europe of all places...:disappointed: ttyl Zhufu ni b p.s. "Zhufu ni" comes from the bit in Heart of Gold where Inara says "Zhufu ni, mei-mei" to Nandi. It means "blessings on you, dear sister" but I shortened it to "blessings on you". Just thought you might like to know.

I am mad at Yahoo
Monday, 26 September 2005 14:38:00

I had been giving my rating of a lot of movies at the Yahoo movie site, and then last night they inform me that they do NOT recommend that I see 'Serenity' because based on my previous reviews I won't enjoy it!!!! WTF?!?! Luckily they had a space for feedback or I might have burst a blood vessel; I informed them that there was something seriously wrong with their site if they couldn't tell from my previous ratings that I love sci-fi and I particularly LOVE great writing. I went on to tell them that I had already seen an advanced showing of 'Serenity', I already knew I loved it, I already knew I would see it many more times, and I was infuriated that they would recommend to anyone that they not go see this great film! grrr argh.

Well... Isn't That Shiny.

Some shinyness to report, up here north of the border. My local paper, the Ottawa Sun, had a two page Serenity spread in it's showcase section this weekend. Also, a local radio station had a contest to win two tickets to an early premiere screening last week. Canadians helping the signal along. -'Ski

Have you found me? I don't think so. You've scraped my surface & examined the shavings under a micro scientific scope. You'd think that such a scrutiny would reveal the multitudes of truth. and it doesn't. I've been written off, told I was unqualified, told I simply didn't have it, or posessed of whatever it was that it took, that it would seem so many others had. But I do have one thing, I've always had it. The deeper me. I faced a mockery of my passions in younger days. Spent time in the principals office for something as harmless as my faith. I prayed at the lunch table! Lock me away!!! Never have I been oh so understood and to even stand to be in the presence of those who just might indent me and find that the spirit does not snap back into place like a Mountain Dew bottle. But I fall back upon myself, in my safetied world, tis far from a mask, or a layers, or a skin, it is a hidden soul, that is so often worn on my pocket, and sometimes on my back, a large logo of three rings & a bull's eye in the middle. I once asked, "why" as my lunch was rudely interrupted by someone who decided I was worthy of a solid hit square in the face. My paisley shirt stained in blood, my blood. The shirt now cast aside as was my resolve in that stupid, stupid moment. And a wave of selfing punishment like a greying cloud thunders around. In here is healing, in here is understanding. In here, is well....here. I never asked to be understood, I never desired to be appreciated, I never signed a dotted line for a petition for anyones approval. To myself I found my greatest fan and harshest critic. So....why? Why do I pour out my depth, and tear back the layers of myself saying here look at me, beneath my skin are muscles and organs and bloody covered things that lie within every body else. and every else's body. But there is a deeper me. Am I satisfied with what I do? What I do? Is that my definition of myself? I sure hope not. No I long for more, to walk beyond yellow walls and bricking buildings. I want to walk back out to the field and be at one with the ground. To hold something natural in my hand. A sandy moment staring into the depth of the earth and there finding something of a greater beauty. and these are the ramblings of a stranger day. And yet, somehow, I write them, if only to ask, am I the only one. I know the answer is "of course not" And so I tie my shoelaces, and dust off the front of my shirt. I pick up my intangible books off this grey tiled floor. and realize life goes on. And I go on. And I realize with a chuckle, how in the midst of my greater geekdom. I found something beyond a show. Beyond nine actors & costumes & premieres. I found a motto, an inspiration. I found a creed to hold tight and never let go of. And I smile as say to myself, "I'm still flying & it's enough" and my smile grows brighter as I realize I'm not beside myself, but that she is beside myself. My ever faithful, ever loving, and ever understanding. She who would not let me hide in this self-made world. She who broke down every wall, and sought invitation to this solitary place. And I see her there sewing needle in hand, stitching an unstraight line on the sleeves of a pair of goodwill tan coveralls, and with bubbly paint she has written on the pocket the word "Shiny" And I will wear my brown coat. This is our world, our verse and our sky and when it is ours it is always enough. -R. Harris

Need help for Wash costume.
Monday, 26 September 2005 19:41:53

Hey all Last year, I had decided to go as Wash for Halloween this year. But with SERENITY coming out on Friday, I decided to jump the gun by about a month and decide to go to SERENITY dressed as Wash. I'm just wondering what exact clothes he wore in the show. See, I already bough two used Hawaiian shirts at Value Village (not exactly any of his floral patterns but close enough), $20 worth of little plastic dinosaurs to carry along with me, and on Thursday, I'm going to a hair place to dye my hair and cut it at the right length. What I'm wondering about are the details. I have the basics, but I feel like I'm missing someof the specifics. Like what exact color of hair is Wash's? Is it pure red, or reddish/blonde? Does he wear a white t-shirt underneath the Hawaiian shirt and blue jeans, or something else completely? Should I spring for blue contact lenses? These are the kinda things I worry about, since whenever I do a costume, I like to go all the way and literally become that character. If any of you have any tips on how I can fully become Wash. let me know by Friday. Oh, as for Fri, I'm planning on seeing it 4 times in the theatre, and hopefully with each screening, I'll have some non-Borwncoat friends with me.

So I'm not a Browncoat? Then you're a Purple Belly, and a coward too!

Saturday I went to the Serenity Fan Fest at Universal Studios Hollywood. The event went generally well, until the brains at the park decided to cut short the line for signings. (The celebs present were Summer, Adam, the twins, "Fanti" and "Mingo", Chris Buchanan and Loni Peristere, of VFX). Somehow the Browncoats managed to alert Adam of the situation with the dissed Browncoats, and he agreed to stick around to hang with them for a bit. I got my signing done, and then went outside to have a pint at the Irish pub across from the Globe theater. Now, for some reason, Adam Baldwin remembers me. He's asked my name about 10 times, but he forgets, yet he apologizes for it, and makes a point of saying hi to me and talking to me. He's also convinced that I got him beer back in March (which I didn't do, but if the man says "cat", I meow - or have you not noticed his size? I ain't about to argue with him 'bout anything!) Anyhoo, I'm at the pub and I see him coming and sitting down outside. The entrance to the pub had two planters, one on each side of the door. I come out, and I say, "So, Adam, can I make good on that beer you say I got you?" He turns around. "Hey, Tracy! Sure, stick around, and we'll do it when I'm done with this one." (For those interested parties, he drinks lager.) 20 minutes go by, we're in deep conversation with Adam (there were about 15-20 Browncoats there). I am standing close to him, but not crowding him, next to the planter to his right. I am holding my Serenity poster vertically with my left hand, and my own beer in the other hand. Therefore, I have no hands available for anything. (You'll see why I make a point of mentioning this later.) Like I said, 20 minutes go by, and this woman comes over to tell Adam the Browncoats that didn't get the signing are about to revolt. He becomes Jayne - he leans back in his chair, takes a swig of beer and goes, "Ah, let 'em! People rioting on account of me... now that's a sweet life!" The woman stays behind me. She taps my shoulder once to take his picture, I comply, and resume my previous stance. She taps my shoulder again for a second picture, and I comply again, resuming my position. Now let's be clear here - the man is in DOWN TIME! He's having a gorram beer, chatting and not being a monkey in exhibition. And if you already took two pictures of the man sitting in a chair, not moving, do you need a third one? And to bother someone who's been there longer than you, AND who's waiting to go get the promised beer, on his command? Well, apparently she did. Basically she wanted me to move out of the way to go on taking pictures. I said no. And resumed my position. She then pointed to a video camera in the crowd. I looked and saw it was a guy I'd previously talked to while queueing for the signing, who'd clearly said he "didn't really care for autographs or anything involving the BDHs" and that he was "there for someone else". Clearly, if the guy wanted to shoot closer, I would have complied. He didn't move. In fact, he moved further away. After about an hour, Adam decides it's time to go. So he's saying good-bye, and we shake hands to the tune of the following exchange: Me: "So you're gonna be at the Flanvention in December, right?" Adam: "Yeah - you'll be there?" Me: "Of course." Adam: "It's a date. See you then!" Adam leaves, and a bunch of us descended on the Hard Rock Cafe (initially there were 20 of us, by the end we were 40. The waitress said, "You guys keep reproducing like Gremlins!" By the end of the night, we'd converted her...) Like I'd mentioned earlier, I had no extra hands available. Imagine my surprise when I found a post yesterday in the Southern California Browncoats Yahoo! group calling me "horrible", someone who "was hitting everybody with the movie poster and refused to move", and who was "touching Adam every 10 seconds," "the kind of fan who would have been evicted from the premiere party" (never mind that there were people who treated said party like a gorram convention, asking for autographs and pictur

Non-Spoilery Review Quotes
Monday, 26 September 2005 22:56:34

Ken Tucker, New York Magazine reviewed Serenity, as was posted. But since it had a spoiler in it, maybe not everyone saw it. So here's a couple of choice quotes for those of you keeping yourselves unspoiled:
As writer-director Joss Whedon proved in his long run on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (seven seasons) and his short one on Firefly (eleven episodes), he has two distinct yet complementary gifts: He can write quick, gabby banter for an array of heroes and oddballs better than any auteur since Preston Sturges, and he can dramatize the camaraderie within an ensemble better than anyone since Howard Hawks. Thus, Serenity—his big-screen expansion of Firefly, bankrolled by Universal because the DVD sold way beyond expectations—is a sci-fi saga that manages to be at once stirring and screwball, gut-busting and gut-wrenching, and more fun than you had at any bigger-budget movie this past summer. Whedon knows you never watched the original TV show, and so he makes that fact not matter.
Here he talks about plot points and whatnot, but he ends it with this glowing praise:
With Serenity, Whedon proves once again that the storytelling and characterization featured by the best television writing are just as rich and deep—often more so—than anything in the cinema. The movie is suffused with a uniquely sardonic romanticism (humor and passion both tart and sweet). And it’s also an action movie that truly defines the term “space opera”: Serenity achieves a grandness—a heightened rapture—that few adventure films even have the imagination, or the idealism, to aspire to these days.
