The city of Nice terror attack follows a series of vehicle attacks on civilians, including the 2014 Dijon attack and the 2014 Nantes attack; both ISIL and Al-Qaeda have encouraged sympathizers living in Western countries to carry out such attacks. According to media reports, the terrorist was known to police for five prior criminal offenses, notably regarding armed violence. He was last arrested less than a month before the attack after a traffic accident in which he had been sleeping at the wheel, and remained subject to judicial supervision. He was, however, not registered as a national security risk with French authorities

French President Francois Hollande said several children were among the dead and added that it was 'undeniable' the massacre was a terrorist attack.

He said the truck attack was done 'to satisfy the cruelty of an individual, and maybe a group.' Speaking after visiting the hospital where victims were treated, he also said that France was 'facing a struggle which will be long.'

Anti-terror police swooped in as the city was put on lockdown and residents were warned to stay indoors for their safety. Gunshots rang out in the streets, with the gunman targeting hotels and cafes in the port city in the south of France.

One witness called Antoine said: 'We were at the Neptune beach and a firework display had just finished. That is when we saw a white lorry. It was going quickly at 60-70 kilometres an hour.'

Eyewitness Wassim Bouhlel said that he saw a truck drive into the crowd and then witnessed the man emerge with a gun and start shooting.

'There was carnage on the road,' Bouhlel said. 'Bodies everywhere.'

Bodies could be seen lying on the floor by the beach, as the police and other emergency services tried to deal with a mass panic.

Interpol is sending a response team to the French city of Nice to help identify victims and aid in the investigation into the truck attack that left at least 84 people dead.

According to the international police organization, the team will include anti-terrorism specialists.

US President Barack Obama has condemned what appears to be 'a horrific terrorist attack' and has directed his officials to provide any assistance required by the French government.

French President Francois Hollande said Friday that "many foreigners and young children" were among those killed or injured after the truck attack on a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, with around 50 fighting for their lives.

"There are French among the victims and also many foreigners from every continent and many children, young children," said a clearly moved Hollande in a speech from a hospital in the French Riviera city.

"As I speak 84 people are dead, and around 50 are in a critical condition between life and death," he added.

Just a couple of comments: Clearly, France's "State of Emergency" -which negates what few legal protections French citizens have regarding search, seizure, and detention - did nothing to prevent this attack. Nonetheless, the State of Emergency - which was due to expire in just a few days- will be extended for another three months.

This is a little like the intrusive electronic butt-fucking that has been going on since BushII, which did nothing to prevent ANY of the recent mass-shootings (however inspired) in the USA. And since that huge data center is Utah - which has room enough to store everyone's electronic records, emails, and phone calls - has been such an utter failure at preventing mass killing, why was it constructed in the first place?

In the meantime, yes- there was brutal vicious torture at the Bataclan, with women being stabbed in the genitals, eyes gouged out, and men castrated and with their testicles stuffed in their mouths. You didn't hear about that, did you?

At SOME point, we might want to collectively get our heads out of our asses, where they have been stuffed since time immemorial.
