I don't know if I'd say it's *common*, but it's not unheard of. Of course, it's also not "spontaneous human combustion", but rather methane from the bowels being lit off, usually by something like a surgical laser being used to cauterize a small cut or tear.

As usual, PN's hyperbolic response is debunked in the very story he cites to support his ridiculous claims:

You nailed it. John does tend towards the most extreme possible explanation, which kicks off the "Nah" factor in readers. It's not the UFOs and anti-semitism that does it, it's the leap from "evidence suggests" to "we got a lock on this"
