Police block identity of man charged with arson over Australian bushfire

The 39-year-old has been charged with lighting the Churchill-Jeeralang bushfire in the LaTrobe valley region of Gippsland. The suspect is a local man. Twenty-one people died in the eastern Victorian region where the Churchill fire began.

The man appeared in the regional Morwell Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon charged with three counts – one of arson causing death, one of intentionally or recklessly causing a bushfire, and one of possessing child pornography.

There are fears of an enormous backlash by mourning members of the Churchill community, angry over the fact that one of their own has been charged with the fire that devastated 36,000 ha of land, destroyed hundreds of homes and killed dozens of their friends and neighbours.

As a result, the court hearing was closed and a suppression order was imposed on all details of his identity. The man was secretly transferred to Melbourne on Friday afternoon where he is expected to face court again on Monday.

200+ deaths from these fires ? All that land and property torched?

No, you shouldn't kill him. Why give him an easy way out?

Put him in prison with a "Bush Fire Starting Nonce" sign round his neck, and leave all the cell doors open at night.

Ok, lets be real clear about this...

Killing is NOT the same as MURDER.

God, I hate how they changed the Bible to cover that little jem.

Its NOT, "Thou shalt not KILL."

It IS "Thou shall not MURDER".

HUGE DIFFERENCE.

And I used the Bible as an example, but it applys across the board.

You kill someone while defending your home, family, self....guess what? By any moral, legal, ethical, standards...you are free and clear. You did the right thing.

You murder someone for THEIR home, family or self....you are a violent dog that needs to be put down.

Murder = Wrong

Killing = Ok

See the difference?

Lock his ass up, without the extrajudicial vengance of feeding him to the other inmates, mind you - a practice that completely disgusts me and says far too much about you, mind.

And you find out what makes him tick, how to prevent it, and given the scope of his crimes, the usual ethics considerations that limit such studies normally will not apply.

There's a facet in machine engineering called "Test to destruction", where you take the testing up to and beyond the limits of the device in order to find out what they are, what makes it tick and how it works under critical stress.

I don't have a problem with doing that in a psychological fashion to a guy like this, and we just might learn something useful about preventing that particular flower of nastiness from blooming, mighten we ?

Get some USE out of the bastard, anyhows.
