Ok not a toy per se, but I love using it and it's the first time I've been healthy enough since before Thanksgiving.
And yes I had a very weird childhood... I recently realized that this game my nanny would play with me ( that I truly loved) was really just her penning me up in a blanket and bouncing the blanket around. I was convinced she had me in a blanket pouch and was jumping around like a kangaroo... sigh. She was only my nanny for a year, but I really liked her better than her replacement.

my books for this semester are going to cost me *AT MINIMUM* $289, which may not seem like a lot, but when you're on a college budget and some of the A$$hole professors change texts every semester so you can't return any of your books for reimbursement, it really effing sucks.

I do get to wondering what I can learn next. Seems few things give that old 1st grade lined paper giganto pencil with no eraser learning how to write letters feeling anymore. I don't know everything and there is plenty out there to learn. But I try not to muddle up my brain with stuff I won't use. It makes me forget other things and takes up needed space for other thing.

My old college book trick was to buy them on amazon.uk.co or whatever the UK site is. Textbook costs are supplemented by the government there (thanks UK taxpayers ). Now that the dollar is tanking it might not be much of a savings.

Well speaking as someone with a lot of impractical knowledge..sometimes it's just nice to know for it's own sake.
Oh and they make you take generals so you're not a one note moron who only knows your subject area and can't find Yugoslavia on a map
OK and amazon uk is a great choice for textbooks... also you can find places online that'll buy your books back. My least favorite thing was when the professor assigned the book they wrote..

the 'classics' are overrated @_@ ive studied them (not by choice really) and haven't found a single one i've actually liked (except shakespeare, if shakespeare is considered a classic, and even then there are only a few of his plays that i love). i dont know why people extoll them so much, they're awful.

i understand the gen ed things, but why do they make u take so MANY? i'm not a moron who cant find yugoslavia (which technically no longer exists since it was broken up into so many little pieces, unless i missed something since 2006) on a map cuz unlike some ppl i can retain information lol. it just seems like an inordinate amount of extra stuff that takes away time from me finishing my major ><;;

I'm gonna try amazon uk then, cuz my campus is practicing extortion once again with their ridiculous prices. Extortion.

I took a series of math courses from Algerbra to Calculus that required two text books and seven courses. Don't ask me anything about any of it. I have never used it. But I have to admit that I enjoyed it. So this may be his reasoning. If you find a subject that interests you, then go for it.

The good thing about varying classes is that it get your brain to work other ways than just the main studies you are in. Mostly they get in the way and use up valuable money better spent elsewhere. But it works to excite thought patterns in some people.

My boss keeps whinging about gorram MSDS sheet which isn't my ferking job but I'll do it just to shut her up. The Cook/Housekeeper is the one responsible but she whines over every little thing. I'll just get the damn things done with already. And if anyone wants to bitch I'll just pull out the job descriptions which clearly states who is responsible for the household/facility chemicals.

Anyhoo, looking to do some fun stuff this weekend. How 'bout y'all?

Register and start voting. It's pretty cool that someone in the government actually wants to find out what we're concerned with. I really hope this page takes off and Obama does like a monthly thing where he answers some of the top issues.

They are sheets that detail info on chemicals and such for various people involved in the facility including fire/rescue. It's actually the cook/housekeepers job to deal with them but trying to get her to (not) do something else in her job description is too much of a hassle.

Ok FLT
Chili
4 tbs olive oil
1/2 onion chopped
2 tsp garlic chopped
1.5 teaspoons crush red pepper flakes
1 green pepper chopped
1 small jalepeno chopped
1 red pepper chopped
3 cans chopped fire roasted tomatos
1 pound extra lean ( less than 10 % fat) ground beef
2 large cans kidney beans
2 cans pinto beans
1 bottle beer
1.5 cups beef broth
3 tbs worchestershire sauce
2 tbs tobasco sauce
In large stock pot put olive oil and chopped onion put on med high heat. Saute onion until clear and lightly brown. Add crushed red pepper flakes and garlic. Saute for 1-2 minutes to release flavor. Add chopped green, red, and jalepeno peppers and saute for 5 minutes. Add ground meat mixture and brown ground meat.Add worchestershire and tobasco sauce. Cook for 2-3 minutes. At this point add tomatos, beer,broth, and beans. Cook 20 min on med high heat then taste and add salt.Reduce heat to low and let simmer 2-3 hours.

Almost almost enough. Just gotta make it a little while longer.

I did forget babout the three day weekend until yesterday so there is a bit of incentive for anyone who gets it.

Finally made it to level 24 on CoD4 last night. For some this is an easy feat. I'm not that good (average 7 kills a game) and I only play an hour a day (on average). Better than that is the new 80gig PS3 now sitting in the living room. Taking back the used 40gig today.

So I go home to dork around for lunch and Milo (one of our dogs) is out chillin' on the front lawn. Mind you the front yard is NOT fenced and is half a block away from a semi-busy street. Going into the backyard I notice there is all manner of paint sprayed on the ground and weeds leading from an open double gate. Whatever utility company that marked our yard left the gate open and let out Milo. I'm glad Lucky didn't get out because she tends to wander aimless about the town.

Just finished watching it and that was pretty much the feeling I had. Really mixed on this whole thing right now. Giving te man a chance out of a lack of choice, but there are things unsettling many people might not understand and would outright reject if I said them. Bottom line is that I had a lingering feeling of sadness that I had not felt for a long time.

I got up extra early to watch it -- I usually don't get up until after 10am Pacific, and it would have all been over by then. I've been a fierce and vocal Obama supporter for about a year and a half now, but I'm still in a bit of shock that we made it this far. I still have the receipt from when I voted from him in the primaries, and then again in the general election, both in my wallet (which isn't really a wallet, but a card case, so I don't carry much in there). So I've been counting down to this day for awhile.

My staunchly conservative sister called me right after the inaugural speech. She's working towards an ROTC commission, and she was watching with some of her squad members, all in uniform, and she said they stood at attention while Obama was sworn in. She told me she was really impressed by the speech, and is feeling better about Obama as president than she thought she would.

Anyway, I know that not everyone is happy with the change we're seeing today, but that's the nature of our election system. But I hope we're all able to pull together as a nation, support the President and each other, and do what needs to be done to move forward. And I hope that the next four years will be better than the last.

CK! How have you been? I've been waiting for you to show up sometime this year. On the 1st I realized that you might have been in Austin for new years. I went to a browncoat new year's eve party and the day after I was like...I wonder if CK was in town. It would have been cool to actually meet an imponderer. It was a pretty fun party too. It was recession themed. So, everyone was dressed like hobos except for a couple who dressed super fancy and went as rich people who weren't affected.

About Obama, I'm hopeful that he can get this country back on track. Though deep down I feel like it's just not going to happen. I pretty much think unless we find some magical economic boom that can't be outsourced that the US is done as a world power. We've got a long way to fall before we settle into our place in the world. I feel like even if Obama can fix our foreign policy and stuff that we're still headed for some of the worst years in our history.

I'm definitely hopeful when it comes to Obama. Especially for things like outsourcing -- the root of that problem is in our tax code that rewards outsourcing and penalizes employing Americans. If it were the other way around, our economy could be a lot different, even given the differences in wages overseas. One of the things that makes me most hopeful is Obama's attitude of re-evaluating everything and looking everywhere for good ideas. We aren't going to fix anything with more of the same, but I don't think we got more of the same today.

I give that to him, there is no where to go but up in many situations. It is gonna be a hard year for the man. I just feel bad for so many people who see his being sworn into office as a saving grace for all people of the United States. He made a lot of promises and many of them are bound to be broken, twisted, or corrupted. I was exchanging texts with my bud John and to be honest, that feeling is a lot like watching the galaxy hand over power to Palpatine with no knowledge of what they were doing. There is an upset balance in the whole thing.

I think everyone feels a bit like that when someone from "the other side" is inaugurated. I can't tell you how angry and disappointed I was when Bush got re-elected in 2004. But this is a democracy, and in four years we'll get another chance to speak our minds. Obama isn't a dictator -- or Emperor! -- that we'll be stuck with indefiniately.

Not really like we're stuck with him, but the descisions he will make will imact people like me more than many others. The feeling I'm talking about is a dreaded shadow of uncertainty. When any person comes out of nowhere and gains a sudden storm of support and is labeled a savior or the carrier of hope I tend to get a bit sceptical. Something about his body language and the style of speaking he uses really bothers me. I tend to use my instincts on such things and tend to be right. I've gotten myself into trouble with people voicing those instincts. And it isn't so much the opposition of someone from the "other side", I agree with most of what he says. But the people he is surrounded by and their views will come into play with his descisions. They are counter productive to the promises and views we've been told he has.

Of course I've been shunned by many who don't put stock in uncertainty and instinct. Basically been told I don't know what I'm talking about, I'm ignorant, and I'm paranoid.

I wouldn't go so far as to say you're ignorant or paranoid. ;)

There's a lot to be worried about in our current world, but also a lot to be hopeful about, if you look at it the right way. But it'll be what it'll be, there's nothing any of us can do about it now. Bush and his team have had far-reaching effects too, which I think can be argued got the country into a lot of trouble. But we're still here, we survived. I have a hard time imagining Obama could get us into worse trouble than Bush did, but even if he did, we would survive that too. I'm hopeful that he will do much more good than harm, but even the worst President can't destroy the country, not really.

That was one of my main concerns in 2004. Now I'm hoping Obama will have a plan for strengthening National defense and withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan. Not to say the fight is won, but the ultimate cost is more than should have been for people in country. Infrastucture and stability should have been established two years ago. American war busnisses should have been marketing peacetime products and commodities three years ago.

Hillary Klinton. But she is now what, fifth in line. Might be an even worse fate determined for us.

Updates... I tried talking to her, get her to tell someone about it, but she got really riled up and told me to forget it, she was done and over with that, and she's really happy now. And she's started dating a guy she really likes, and she's gotten her grades up so things aren't as bad for home with her, and she has been really happy lately. She's wearing short sleeves all the time too, so, I think she's improved. She also tends to be a very changable person, going from one mode of behavior to another (yes, that has caused many headaches for me), so I think she'll be okay. I'm definately keeping an eye on her, but she seems to have recovered (and not as an act, either- she's absolutely terrible at lying)

That actually could be really bad. Of course that's way too little information to make any kind of diagnosis, but some of that could point to bipolar disorder. Which is very dangerous. Suicidal tendencies are common when the person is in their down swings.

It's a tough road ahead if she does have bipolar disorder. The best first step is to talk to a psychiatrist. The tough part is she has to be willing to get help. She'll need to tell her parents likely just to find the money to see a psychiatrist and she'll have to be willing to be honest with the psychiatrist. None of that stuff is easy. When bipolar people are happy they feel like they're fine and there's no need to get help. Which is why so many of them stop taking their medication and then when they become depressed they get suicidal. It's a vicious disorder and I hope your friend doesn't suffer from it. Better safe than sorry though.

Hey Zeek the crust recipe I left in the thread ( and will leave you here) is awesome, holds the pie strong and true and is easy, cheap, and doesn't require a rolling pin.. can't fail

1 and 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
2 tsp sugar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
3 tbs milk

mix flour, salt and sugar. stir in oil and milk. Put in pie pan and press into pan until it's more or less evenly in the bottom and sides ( you can do it on the top as well if you press it out roughly flat and about the same shape as the top of the pie , then flip it...works every time

I agree wholeheartedly with Zeek. Not to say I know a lot about this particular thing, but I have had to take classes on suicide prevention (not saying your friend is suicidal!!! just saying,) and there was an instance where a person was severely depressed, his friend took him to talk to someone, and after the session he seemed totally better, so they left him alone. He ended up commmitting suicide. Now I'm not, not saying your friend is suicidal, but in cases of depression or bipolar disorder, you need to take signs of improvement with a few grains of salt.

You've gotta expect hissy fits when you tell her you think something's wrong that she needs help for, but I think it's something that needs to be done. She won't like it, but somehow you have to convince her that it's the right thing to do, even if you have to say something that hurts her into finally admitting the truth. preferably before her next down swing, but keep an eye on her. Hope you figure somethin out :\

LF: I agree with Zeek and FLT. I don't think your friend is lying, but she might be telling you the parts she thinks you want to hear. I know that I've gotten pretty good at telling "friends" things with a positive or neutral spin when my life sucked for the telling. Those who are really close to me have an idea how bad it was (I started researching moving at least half an ocean away from where I live). But for others -- I'd focus on one or two good things that happened recently and talk about those things. I'm sure that some of them might have had a slight feeling that I might be slightly unhappy but not how bad things really were.

Side note, LF (about the homework) -- as a former teacher, I really suggest you do what you need to do to make your parents happy. If that means doing your homework so your grades are good enough so that you can get back online, then that's what you've got to do. (Adults have to do it all the time -- we call it "jumping through hoops".) I'll skip the parental-type lecture, but I really think you should see this as practice for when you're an adult. (I accidentally started this in the Bar and Grill, so blame me for the scoldings.)

Different note: This weekend was a four-day weekend for people here. Why? Because there was a threat of a huge storm with winds just below a category 1 hurricane. *grumble* I read somewhere that people grumbled because all the state and city workers for most of the state got a free paid vacation day (the winds were much smaller than anticipated). I on the other hand, am royally annoyed that prior to this year, all workers were expected to show up to work no matter what. Sudden freak windstorm cause the tress to fall, crash on your property, and put you at risk? Better show up buddy. Downpour with enough rain to drown the whole island starting at 6 in the a.m.? Well, if you can't make it, we're going to charge it to your sick days.

*grumble* Why couldn't they have figured this out before?

I worry about that with our dogs. Though barky, the aren't THAT tough and are easily distracted with food. I do like having them when we are home. People near the yard are warned early and were probably saved 230 grains of weight gain.

YAY DDR!!!! ive been contemplating getting that for a long time, but i dont have the $$

ok, so there was this class i wanted to get into (first time its ever been taught, and the teach doesnt know if he's gonna do it again, but its awesome) but i couldnt because a bunch of whiny seniors were like "EEEEEEEEEE!! I HAVE ONE REQUIREMENT LEFT AND I NEED TO GRADUATE THIS SEMESTER AND YOUR CLASS FILLS IT PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!!!!!" so all the permission numbers were given and i was left out in the cold.
Sat in on the class this evening and found its mostly online discussion/posting of stuff, but its on a program thats invitation only, so of course only the people assigned to the class can get in and do the stuff.
*Now*, apparently the class wasnt full today, because the professor counted and was like "whoa, im missing some people" --people who never showed up btw. The structure of the class seems to be a bit beyond me, because it sounds like he pretty much just wants the students to do things for themselves, and i havent had a class like that yet ><;; but i'd still love to learn the material if possible.
Ponder: should i email the professor and ask him if any of the people who didnt show up dropped the class, and ask him if i can enroll? once again the structure and material seem to be a little advanced for what i'm used to, (its a lit to film class, tracking the transition from novel/short story to the screen, which ive always been interested in) but i'm going to kick myself if i dont join in and he ends up not teaching this class again. i love college ><;;
