If I remember correctly, it was a collaboration between NASA and the Military that gave us the over-sized version of the Space Shuttle that we ended up with. This made the Shuttle uneconomical to fly as well as to expensive to build. Just when NASA is starting to get their shit together we're going to make the same mistakes of the past. Building the Shuttle to Military specs set the space program back 20 years, hopefully Obama will get some good advice before getting the Military involved again.

Combing the U.S.’s civilian agency with our military is a bad idea… NASA will become a creature of the Defense Dept and the CIA. And in a couple of years it will be irreversible.

Richard Branson (Virgin Atlantic) and Boeing have already starting looking into "Commercial" space travel, hopefully NASA will give Branson a call.
