Here's a new 76th thread, y'all enjoy.

I might need to take a look through this initial post to make sure that everything is still relevent.

_______________________________________________
We represent a newly-formed unit of Independent soliders at the outbreak of the hostilities (prior to Du Khang and Serenity Valley).
First and foremost, remember that this is a fan-based organization, and our first rule is "Show up. March. Have Fun!"

Our inaugural march took place at DragonCon in Atlanta in September of 2007.

We do have a few rules and regulations that must be met in order to be considered as a member, including uniform requirements and weapons requirements. These will be outlined below. Please be sure to read over all the information and confirm that you can meet all of these requirements before applying for membership. We are not trying to keep people out, but we do want to present a united, uniform Battalion of Independent soldiers, and one of the best ways to do this is to look the same.

There are two basic types of uniforms we will be using: Type A and Type B.

Type A will use Mal as a model:

This "uniform" consists of the following:
•Pants with brown stripes up the sides of the legs – please see below for approved merchants.
•An undershirt – black or brown, long-sleeved. Button-ups are acceptable but preferably without a high collar.
•The red vest that the CO has designed. You may either purchase from him or ask for a pattern and fabric swatch.
•The overcoat that the CO has designed. You may either purchase from him or ask for a pattern and fabric swatch.
•Helmet – needed for parade, but other head coverings approved for non-marching appearances (see below).
•Boots – please see below for approved styles and merchants.
•Scarf – Red for enlisted, blue for officers.
•Dark brown belt – 2” is recommended.

The Type B uniform uses Zoe as a model:

This "uniform" consists of the following:
•Pants with brown stripes up the sides of the legs – please see below for approved merchants.
•An undershirt – black or brown, long-sleeved. Button-ups are acceptable but preferably without a high collar.
•The red vest that the CO has designed. You may either purchase from him or ask for a pattern and fabric swatch.
•The "smock" that is worn underneath the red vest. You may either purchase from him or ask for a pattern and fabric swatch.
•Mail sleeves – please see below for approved choices.
•Helmet – needed for parade, but other head coverings approved for non-marching appearances (see below).
•Boots – please see below for approved styles and merchants.
•Scarf – Red for enlisted, blue for officers.
•Dark brown belt – 2” is recommended.

General notes on the uniforms:
•While in all the battle scenes we have seen on screen the uniforms have seen some wear and tear, our unit will not appear that way. DO NOT distress your parade uniform. This pristine uniform is the first uniform we request you have so that you will be able to represent us properly. If you wish to have a ‘battle worn’ look, we ask that you please reserve this for personal appearances and have this as your secondary uniform.

•Sidearms are left up to the individual (pistol and knife--please have them approved by Command before wearing). You DO NOT have to wear a pistol or knife if you do not want to. Note that all knives will need to be peace-bonded for the duration of any appearance you make in uniform.

•Bags and pouches can help complete your outfit. These are also left up to personal choice, but some options are presented below.

Hi all!

I have a few questions. I was wondering about the 76th site. I sent in thing to sign up a while back but nothing ever happened. Any clues? Also, any suggestions on a good place to get boots? I've got a costume in the works but I'm having real trouble finding decent boots that fit my fat girl calves.

Hi Kayna!

I had the same problem. I got a pair of boots, but they are not perfect. I'm looking to buy a new pair and if I get them approved, I'll add it to the boot thread on the forums.

The boot thread was condensed in January's newswave. If you didn't recieve it, you can also view it on our MySpace blog here:

Hi Sister!
I would love to go but it looks like it's not going to be in the cards for me this year. Just not enough money to go around.

I'll check all that out! Thanks!

As to the boots thing, I wasn't on here much at all last year (RL did a number on me) so I guess I missed that thread. I like some of the links on the myspace thing for the uniform but I'm also looking for some simple, slip on, or zip up style boots for a general verse style outfit. There's a pic up there but I don't see a link. Any help there?

Hi McNutt!

Were you interested in joining the battalion?

I'm in the north-east US, in PA, west of Philadelphia. We haven't been having too many informal battalion-only gatherings in our area just yet. But I know that it is becoming more and more likely that I will be attending the Shore Leave convention in MD in uniform. I am unsure if my sister (who is also in the battalion) will be attending, but there is some interest from at least one other member.
http://www.shore-leave.com/

I did help out with registration at the Browncoat Ball in uniform and there were two other members of the battalion who attended the Ball when it was here in Philly in November.

PM me with your e-mail address if you need more info. :)

Hello there, 76th!

I posted the message below on the "General Discussions" forum, and somewhere there suggested that you folk might have an answer:
_____
My family and I were at Wondercon in San Francisco today (had a great time!) Amongst the swag we made off with is a set of four Independent (Browncoat)military insignia patches.

All are the familiar green triangle with two yellow stripes and an inverted blue star, but there is also a rank structure, indicated by dark pips in the triangle's corners -- one has no pips at all, the other three have pips that grow progressively darker.

I presume that the darker the pip, the higher the rank, but does anyone know what the actual ranks involved are? I.E., is the sequence "Private, Corporal, Sergeant, Master Sergeant" or "Noncomissioned, Lieutenant (JG), Lieutenant, Captain", or something else?

I understand there is some semi-official source (perhaps one of the visual guides?), but the dealer didn't know which rank was which, nor could he suggest what reference to look in.

Anybody out there in the black got the answer?

____

I've checked out the 76th's home page, and I've seen your uniform specs, so I know you don't use this particular patch as a rank signal. But the dealer was pretty sure that this system was cannonical in some reference somewhere, and you good folks do seem like a good place to trawl for information. If it turns out the dealer was misinformed,I'll still hold onto these as a collector's item, but it'd be nice to know.

Thanks in advance.

My thanks to those on both threads who have tried to help me out. Here's what I've got so far:

1: The Black-Star variant patch w/out corner pips was formerly sold by browncoatpatches.com. The mistake in color was apparently due to bad color register on the screen captures used to design it.

2: The Blue-star patch w/out shoulder pips is sold by Out To The Black Outfitters. This is, I gather, the standard supplier for the 76th.

3: The shoulder-pip variants are from a company called Patches 'n Pins. They include one patch with a gold border.

4. The reference giving the pip-bearing patches canonicity is the Firefly Official Companion Volume Two, but though it pictures them, it apparently doesn't explain rank structure. The pipless blue-star version is also apparently canonical from screen captures.

5: Parenthetically, there also seems to be on-screen reference for the star being worn both point-up and point-down. This is apparently due to a costuming error on set, but which version is the original error is anybody's guess at this point.

Thanks again for your help.

Kayna, I will see what I can find out about you not being approved for the 76th, that shouldn't have happened.

As for the pips on the Independent triangle/blue star patches, from what I have heard it is a detail that never got fully fleshed out. I think they talk about it in one of the visual companions (I think volume 1) as if they planned to do something cool with it but never got around to it. I have seen the different patches, and will pass along your question to someone who might know a little more.

Use a wiffle ball bat. Less bruising but just as satisfying.

Hell with that. The Colonel has over 40,000 rounds that Cpt. West sent him and I still have about half of the 24,000 rounds I had for the Memorial Day shindig. Sending a few hundred at her students would be fun. I'll be right over with a few rifles, MsB.

Though I do agree with sister, wooden bat or 2x4 against a skull does make a satisfying sound.

Friendly bump from another airsoft player (though only a "weekend warrior" since I've gone to college and can't have my rifle down here). Glad to see that firefly is being kept alive in that arena at least.

Well, I'm out in Kansas and I'm willing to bet most of you folks are West and East Coast. I'm a WWII reenactor ( http://137thinfantry.org/ have been with this unit for two, three years now) and oddly enough you're uniform and such reminds me off that a lot; the specific gear/equipment required and what not.

The only problem is, I'm still collecting that gear (and being a college student makes it a bit tougher); still need a bayonet for the basic impression but I'll also have to pick up some other "non-essential" but important equipment, like a gasmask bag (for random stuff like rations, ammunition, grenades etc) and my rifle's blank adapter.

Starting over, for this would be a bit of a pain right now, since I recently bought an airsoft rifle (An very nice AK-47 which I've barely been able to use-I'm a little sore about that), especially considering that I technically have a few pieces of this equipment already (the Steel M-1 Helmet for example) but I can't use them (need my helmet to be OD green) and so I'd have to buy that again.

Prehaps after I finish collecting my US Impression and if I get more into Airsoft (I only got started last summer) this summer again.

Though, it would be nice to actually have a uniform going airsofting; usually I simply go with an odd OpFor one, wearing Desert night camoflauge with some other pieces of US equipment. Goes good with the AK, but I feel a little out of place(some of my friends are on teams that have similar uniform requirements, usually modern US uniforms though).

Edit: I might have to pick up some of those patches just for the hell of it; I think it's pretty cool that you guys have them.

A quick question: I understand nearly no latin, but I get the first part, but what's "LIBERTAS SUMPTUS" mean?

Libertus Sumptus literally means Liberty Costs (I think) but we prefer the more loose translation of "Freedom Ain't Free".

I completely understand being a college student. Feel free to join our message boards just to see what we're all about. We have plenty of folks who are on there who aren't able to march with us for whatever reasons. :)

Sister, I'm so sorry to hear about you mother. My mom nearly died last October and that was hard enough. *Hugs* and well wishes.

Tankobite, I also understand the lack of funds thing. I have nearly nothing for this uniform right now. I'm still trying to get my SCA armor together (been playing for about a year) and am currently unemployed. Bleck!!

Also, how do I join the 76'th forum? Is it just a matter of registering on the site?

I'm already working on a recruitment video, though we probably ought to put in some video of the march, as right now it's just airsoft battles from various shindigs.

Kayna, you are one of the ones who slipped through the cracks, and I apologize for that. I take care of all of the incoming applications, and I know I have seen yours. I will re-check it when I can this weekend, and you should be activated soon.

One thing you can do is make sure you are signing up for the forums with the same e-mail address that you sent in your application with. In fact, if you want to send me that e-mail address (james dot spettel at robins dot af dot mil) I can pass it along and guarantee you are activated tonight when the Colonel gets on.

Well, its not the funds per say; I have a great summer job, its just I'm trying not to overextend my recreational activities: Reenacting, Airsofting, Bagpiping (eventually I'll have to buy an actual set and a kilt and what not for my pipe band). I'd rather take care of one thing at a time.

RIVERISMYGODDESS: I think I'll register on the boards, at worst I think I will get the patches for a friend at least (He has the BSG ones, but I think these would be cooler).

I'm a big fan of TANSTAAFL too!

OK, sent it in. I guess I'm really going to have to consider this now that I've signed my papers...don't want to end up like Ol' Joe Camp.

(For those of you not familiar with old Civil War music)

Quote:

1 Old Joe Camp when he came to town,
He enlisted under Captain Brown;
Brown swore him on the very first slap,
And sent him off to Manassas Gap.

2 Brown he was a-walking around,
He found Joe sleepin' on the ground;
Brown said to Joe, "It is your lot,
We'll take you out and have you shot."

3 Said Joe to Brown, "Fightin's not my intent,"
Said Joe to Brown, "Fightin's not my intent,"
And now I can't do you no dirt,"
And to the Yankees he did desert.

4 The ammunition gittin' thin,
The Yanks wound Joe up and poked him in;
They fired him off at the very first round,
And fired him back to Captain Brown.

I think the tune is now called "Shortnin bread" but I like these lyrics better.

As long as I'm here when the clocks tell me to be here, I don't notice the daylight outside, since there are no windows on my office, I always get here in the dark (0600), and I always leave in the sunlight (1430).

I hope you are all well, I am really looking forward to seeing you at the shindig this weekend.

No, this one was surplus. He made it for someone roughly the same body type I was (and I guessed it correctly when I PMed him!) and instead of it going to waste, I bought it. So I don't think he's doing any sewing. Even if it doesn't have any patches on it, I've got a 76th patch already and would just need rank and an IA patch. And since I STILL need ranks for my OLD uniform coat, I am not worried.

I'm undecided if I will keep both uniforms parade-ready or make one distressed.

If you live anywhere near a military base the PXs sell them. I'm not sure if you need to have a military ID to buy them though (I don't know, if I ever needed military rank insignia, usually I just borrowed them from my Dad). If that's the case, you can probably get a friend who's military to pick you up a set.

Sucks to be you folks then. The PX is awesome. Like Walmart with no taxes and cooler camping equipment.

(I have one)

Here's an interesting note: I've found an old British Trench coat (from the 80s I think) and next week there's a USSR v. NATO airsoft event that I plan to pick up some equipment (bandolier for my AK, and possibly a Russian helmet). I'm thinking though that if I got the patches for a Browncoat unit I could start making my own personal uniform. It wouldn't be right with your unit's because my coat is a darker brown, so I'd probably go a little wild(I'm thinking of simply using an Australian style hat I have as head gear for example). Not sure what I'll call my unit though; think it'd be neat to get one of those brown Utilikilts and make a Highland Regiment

Tristan might have some extra ones, Boothe, because I got Zeph's old ones when he got his Captain bars.

We actually talked about having a highland sort of regiment within the 76th, so I'd love to see pics if you end up doing that.

Have fun with the airsofting!

I don't go on eBay anymore. I'm just getting back to where I am ok financially, and that would ruin me. :)

I'll be sure to do that. I'm not sure that if I do, whether or not I should go with the Utilikilt or go with an actual one. Historically Scottish Regiments wear the actual one with the tartan colors on 'em, but if we're shooting for a "Brownkilt" then it should probably be like the one we've got pictures of Fillion wearing.

Personally, I'm tempted to keep it historical since that looks a little neater
(in my opinion)

And since I'll have to buy an actual kilt later on for my band, I'd rather not buy another one for this. The one thing that'll be a bit difficult is seeing about working a patch for it (I figured I'd follow your guy's basic rules about the Independent Army patch on the right), but I'm not sure what I'd do about the left side. I'll have to see if I've got any US ones I can mess around with and make it into one.

Edit: FYI, the link you guys put with the Patch to "Out to the Black" is broken.

A happy Saturday morning bump.

I think I had WAAaaaayyyy too much coffee today. My hands are shaking a bit. But mmm...Dunkin Donut coffee. Yum! How could I resist. My head is gonna kill me later, I just know it.

Plz excse me while I zip around the room. Wheeeee!

(must get house cleaning done before the buzz wears off)

Good morning.

Hope everyone is having a good time at Tristan's. It's a bit rainy here, but nothing like that tornado through Atlanta. Keep safe and have fun!
