Jerusalem's the really tricky bit. Can't see any peace over there any time soon purely because of that.

Yeah, here's my thought since Jerusalem is holy to the Muslims and the Jews (and the Christians if you want to split them from the Jews) why not just give it over to international control, call it completely neutral and not let Israel OR the Palestinians have it? That would remove it from the Israel-Palestine equation, since for either one to have it they would have to invade and face the fury of a sternly worded letter from the U.N.

I can't remember which book, but Tom Clancy suggested just that - make Jerusalem an international city, chock full of uniformed and armed UN soldiers/guards, where any religious leader gets the utmost respect. Interesting idea.

This has already been tried. A long time ago. Look up the 1947 UN Partition Plan, UNGA Resolution 181, which resulted in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

There was this difficulty that started in Sept of 1939. Kept the Brits pre-occupied for several years.
Things were just settling down when the '47 proposal and '48 war broke out.
