A friend sent me this link today. I'm assuming since it's on The Digital Bits it's official???

NOTE: Edited to provide a bigger pic from a different source.

By the way, this is a pretty big first post, huh?

The only thing I'm a bit iffy about is that planet in the upper right hand corner, it's unfamilier which my tastes translate into cheesy. I suppose it'll grow on me though. I wonder what the back and inside are gonna look like...

Well, you guys make good points but I still think it's decent. For one, plenty of TV DVDs I've seen use stock art and Firefly is not going to be an extremely promoted release for the stuido, we're lucky to have it period. Also, the cover art could change between now and production. I think it'll be more appealing when we get a better scan and when we see it in person as well.

Me, I was hoping for a minimalist approach: just that brown leatherette look with the emblazoned Serenity line art.

But realistically, I'll look at the cover art -- good or bad -- for exactly 10 seconds anyway.

I suppose, from a marketing standpoint, it might actually be a good thing. It says "look -- this is science fiction," and may bring in new viewers where a cryptic or overly artsy cover may not.

That ain't the real cover, its a photoshop job.
I've seen this before, they use a temporary one to show on websites.
The planet looks like its ripped from a firefly fan site I once visited but I can't remember the name. Anyone else know the site?

Also, look at the firefly logo it's using some other font and starts with a lower case f.

That's the same logo that's on the defunct official website and message board, but the script covers do have the capital "F" form.

It's got to be fake, but why? Are you saying Fox purposely released a fake cover, or some fan did?

Since it's on Digital Bits and TvShowsOnDVD, it seems official, but....

I personally know graphic artists working for $12 an hour who could make something 100 times better in about 10 minutes.

I am confused.

Talking of cheesy photoshop stuff made in ten minutes, I was wondering if anybody was still interested in vcd covers.

I used to run (the now dead) trekvideo.com/firefly and hosted them there. If people are still interested and it's Ok with Haken, I'd like to finish the set and put them in the blue sun room.

I can't remember which episode I got up to but it was somewhere halfway.

just simply the logo and the glowing ship from the end of any epp.. do it all up with matalic reflective ink and stuff to so when you move the box its all shiny

not that they need to make the dvds shinyer its just would be cool

"just simply the logo and the glowing ship from the end of any epp"

I am also fond of minimalism and classy simplicity when it comes to cover art. Despite my feelings for Buffy, I like their cover art...Angel's too. I like the whole monochromatic thing they have going on as well.

I'd go for something as simple as Firefly just floating in a sea of black (a la AC/DC) or the title with some browns....or the title and the ship because well the ship is dead sexy.

In fact, that exact photo of the cast is available for broadcasters to use, e.g., Space in Canada uses it for its Web site. When you select Firefly, this image comes up beside the broadcast times and plot summaries.

Blech! So conventional for such an UNconventional show. Okay, so there are no "aliens" in the image. That's unusual for an SF show, but who's going to notice?

I'd like to see some image that evokes a bit of a shock reaction from the casual viewer. How about the opening scene in Our Mrs. Reynolds: the covered wagon rolls thru pond with everyone blasting away at each other and Serenity parked out back in view.

Okay guys, that's your cue. Maybe start a new thread to present ideas for new cover art and hope that ME sees it.

Otherwise, I think I'm going to write a note to ME to plead for something different.

Hey, a few months back we were happy just to have the DVD's. I wouldn't have given a rip about the covers. Now, let's face it we all may have different ideas on the way we think it should look. That's all part of our personality. I mean heck if we all thought the same we'd be awfully "trekish" Sure I'd have done them differently, and some of ya'll would have dissed up on that too. But we have "cover art". I guess to me it just symbolizes that they aren't gonna pull the plug or the rug from us at the last minute. Sure, we've all gone through alot of crap from Fox & even Amazon. But hey we've got a DVD set. I no longer have to watch them on a cheesy slow computer where they skip & pop. I get quality DVD sound with commentary that I can play on any freaking size screen I want!!! I'm sure we all have opinions on what we would have prefered for the cover art, the extra features, heck I've seen arguments over what we think the right order episode should be, but we got something, and a MOVIE on the way. Sorry, if I'm going off. Opinions are fine and healthy, but lets try to sound a bit grateful. Don't take away my Brown Coat just because I don't agree.

I think the thrust of the discussion is not biting that hand that now deigns to feed us, SS. It's whether or not this is the genuine cover art. And this is not the first piece of bogus cover art to have circulated.

I agree with Succatash-- $12/hour graphic artists could photoshop it up better in 10 minutes.

Point taken, and agreed. Though I would be curious to see other browncoats designs. I'm always impressed by custom cover art. Used to burn alot of U2 shows with custom covers before Firefly.

The bottom half and the spine are alright but I think the planet behind Serenity looks out of place. Don't know if it's the real cover art or not but I'm more interested in what's inside the shiny box than what's on the outside anyway.

One thing to note, the Serenity in the picture is wrong. That's the original Serenity from the un-aired pilot or better known as "the boxy" Serenity. The stream line Serenity is the primary one used in the series, except in a few stock footage scenes. So that might bring merit to the fake cover.

It doesn't matter though, I'm still buying the DVD's. I almost hesitate to send money to FOX though.

The image of Serenity on the cover is identical to the one used in the Firefly Wallpaper released on the Fox site, and I mean identical. The angle of the ship, lighting, coloration and shadowing are dead on, as if the image was lifted from the wallpaper. If this really is genuine, than fox deserves another 'gorram fox' for their cheapness. Any takers?

I actually like it--love the sepia tone. And I don't mind the fact that it's three publicity stills we've seen before, tho personally? I would have used this pic:

(pic is HUGE, so just cut and paste and take the spaces out around the jpg)

instead of this one:

Oh surreal--I hadn't noticed it until now, but the box art? They Photoshop'd Jewel (who is smiling in the original photo). How odd.

ETA: and they photoshop'd Adam too, tho that oen makes more sense to me, since he was slightly out of focus in the original shot. And from the lack-of-bread, it looks like they used a "Train Job" still...

* sigh *

While I am thrilled that Firefly is being released on DVD, the cover "art" leaves a lot to be desired.

Mainly because I desired something that ROCKED.

Could be wishful thinking on my part but, is there any possibility that this cover design is false, and that Mutant Enemy wants to surprise the heck out of us with the REAL, and awesome, cover on December 9th?

As for us Australians that have had to download the series by whatever means we could, normally IRC and wait in que for 2 days for the gorram thing to even start only to have it drop out halfway through...but it was worth it for a GREAT!! series.
I'm greatfull it's comming out in DVD format at all despite the cover which I think is ok( the point of this thread)and despite I now have to go and buy a new DVD player that does multi-region cd's it's worth it to see this great EMMY award winning show the way it was meant to be seen!
Also keep in mind the cover has to be appealing to those people that haven't seen Firefly or don't study every frame in the show and may not know how great it really is.

Ya know based on some of the more unique & even outlandish theories as to why the show was cancelled it could make a very entertaining "doc or mockumentary" Bring in the whole sports season aspect, with abunch of money hungry fox execs deciding the demise of the show. Maybe show them hiriring a group of television hitmen, who's whole purpose is to assasinate good television. Maybe the ultimate villan could be this illuminati group that is sworn a blood oath to one of Leonard Nimoy's ears that they keep vaccum sealed in a glass case. And their oath is to see to the destructiion of any Sci-Fi that has potential to be better than Star Trek. Wow! I'm either twisted, creative, or just well caffinated. This could be a fun project for a small time indie film maker. Someone once posted a comic strip that kind of inspired this. I'll see if I can find it.....
