I learned a new little trivia bit about BUFFY today. On imdb.com, their question of the day was "What Canadian actor turned down the role of Xander on Buffy?" I clicked on it, and imagine my horror when Ryan Reynolds name turned up.

To me, imagining Ryan Reynolds as Xander is like imagining Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones or Sly Stallone as Axel Foley. It just gives me the creeps to imagine that Jason Lee-wannabe as our beloved Xander. If that happened, I would have avoided BUFFY like the plague. I fucking hate that guy. And if they had cast Reynolds as Xander, the show would have crashed and burned. Xander would have been some smug jerk trying to bang Buffy and Willow, instead of the easygoing everyman we know and love.

Who else is getting shivers from that image.

Ok now I really like Ryan Reynolds and remember he's Nathan's cast mate and all...but I agree he would have been far too sarcastic to be Xander

Can't imagine anyone else as Xander except Nicky. Not even his twin brother!

It's not that I think that Ryan would have been bad, it's just that Xander would not have been the character he became with Nicky in the role. Nick brought a sweetness and vulnerability to Xander that made him very loveable, with a constant trembling anger underneath that added to the rashness of the character. Plus his comic timing is amoung the best I've seen. It's amazing to think that Buffy was his first TV role!

No one other than Nicky could be Xander. He was the right amount of dorky, cute, approachable, lovable, etc.

But I do like Ryan Reynolds. LOVED him in 'Just Friends' and that is SOOOO not my usual style of movie. And he was all kinds of buffed out and sexy in Blade: Trinity.

I don't know Reynolds' work, but I must admit to sometimes wondering if the character of Xander would have been written to be more demanding if a more capable actor had been available -- mostly I just try to refuse to be irritated by the shortcomings of both.

As to how anyone could be considered for that role other than Nick is beyond me. There is no other Xander. Period.

no one could ever have been as good as nick! im a little biased since i kinda love him... (captain's still my #1) i agree. ryan wouldn't have been right and would've been less adorable, great guy, best-friendy, (and considerably less gorgeous) and more sarcastic-y, and annoying
