I'm working my way through BtVS, just starting on the third season now. I'm wondering, when I get to the next season where Angel splits off, how much, if any, overlap is there? That is, can I watch an entire season of one of the shows at a time, and then watch the corresponding season of the other one, or do I need to watch them simultaneously to avoid missing anything important?
So far, absolutely loving the show. The first two thirds of the first season were a bit lame, but the second season was awesome. I still think Firefly is better, but this is some damn good TV.

there's some overlap, but it's not neccessary to see angel to understand buffy or vice versa.

TMTCM, that's right, no need to see Angel, but just in case you want to know, there are some great eps that do tie in w/Buffy season 4, most noteably w/Faith. You might want to rent Angel season 1 from Blockbuster or something (Unless $ is no object; in that case just buy it...).

And there is a small overlap in season 7 that also deals with Faith.

I do intend to see Angel too, it's just a matter of whether I need to see them at the same time or not. If I watch Buffy first, will anything in Angel be spoiled for me?
Thanks for the responses

You won't get spoiled for Angel watching Buffy in the first year of Angel/4th of Buffy, but there's a big Angel spoiler in the season 5 Buffy episode Crush. But if you haven't seen any of Angel by that time you might not realize what they're talking about. :)
But don't watch Angel first because you'd get really really spoiled for Buffy on many occassions.

I watched Angel up to season 2, and then I felt I had better watch all the BTVS seasons first which I did. Very good I might add, but now I'm not really interested in going back to Angel. All that Buffy covered what I needed and Angel seems not so exciting now.

I was just enjoying this very same aspect of the two shows! I've seen all of Angel and am currently finishing up Buffy Season 4 for the first time.
I agree that there would've been a little less spoilage had I seen the Buffy eps first. The cross-over points are still very entertaining though.
I personally still prefer Angel (seasons 2 & 3 are my faves) to Buffy (3 is my fave so far)... But they're both great shows, and neither should be missed!

It's not uncommon for stories to begin in Buffy and continue or conclude in Angel. If you're watching either series independant of the other DVD-style, you do miss out, unfortunatly.
