When anyone is learning how to stake, it has to be perfect, but the rest of the time, it seems like anywhere in the upper torso area will do.

I just rewatched Homecoming. I have to say the spatula staking of Candy Gorch has to be the worst ever. It's in her bellybutton! And in the Buffyverse, doesn't it have to be wood?

yea, that's one of the areas buffy kinda lacked in was making sure the character actually hit the heart.

The spatula did have a wooden handle tho, so that part wasn't a mistake.

In the commentary for the pilot, Joss does mock Nick Brendon for not knowing where the heart is.

Pretty sure it has to be wood since I have seen Angel take a sword to the heart, Think Spike got staked with something metal once to, dont remember if it was in the heart though.

yeah, Riley staked Spike right in the heart w/a plastic stake once just to freak him out...
it hurt but didn't do any lasting damage
(poor angel has had swords stuck in him more times than I can count)

Oh yeah, rememeber when the LA woman cop managed to dust the bad vampire, but NOT dust Angel when she thrust a wooden pole through both of them, but angling it so it didn't go through Angel's heart?!

So yeah, you do have to stake through the heart w/wood...but just like Nick Brendon in the first episode of the first season, sometimes they screw up and you are supposed to not notice.....

Xander staking Jessie by accident was the first one I thought of too! There were others... Once more with feeling had one when Buffy was singing in the grave-yard I think...

The one that always bugs me is in "Chosen" when Anya is battling the uber-vamps with a sword. She slashes it in the legs/waist and it dusts. Bothers me everytime.
