I've only recently started working on a Firefly fic, and I already enjoy throwing in with Chinese passages.
What I'm wondering is does anyone know of a website that will translate strings of English text into Chinese, similar to Altavista or Google, but output in western characters so that text will then be usable to myself and other fanfic writers?

I don't know of an translators, but if you read the fanfics a few of them have translations at the bottom.

Go to the bottom of the Fireflyfans home page - to Firefly Swarms on the Web, Reference and you'll find:
Firefly Chinese Pinyinary - http://fireflychinese.home.att.net/
Hope that helps!

Already been there. It helps some, but not much.
Crossreference my post in the "General foreign swears" thread to get an idea where I want to go.

Grimlock,
Just a friendly warning, careful w/ some of the online translation sites cause unless you know the language some of them will screw it up pretty badly. A couple of my Japanese friends have used Japanese-English trans sites and it was funny. One friend was asking me a bunch of questions to put on the school website and one was question was what is your blood type (Instead of whats your sign) Only problem is it came out as what is your bloody liquid type if I remember correctly. Even using Google's trans into English from Japanese tool its screwed up some of the time. Well hope that helps.
mata, Ookami yori

Oh, I know exactly what you mean. I've had some experiences those things.
I want to at least put the effort in.
Without having to submit every phrase for translation.

If you want to create your own (admittedly rough) chinese expressions and profanities, first go to:
www.freetranslation.com
Type it in, copy the result and go to
http://www.pingasianimports.com/Chinesepinyin/Translate.asp
Paste it into the box, hit translate, and there's your words, helpfully rendered into the English alphabet.

You can translate your phrases into simplified Chinese here
http://www.worldlingo.com/en/products_services/worldlingo_translator.h
tml
and then copy it and paste it here
http://www.chinese-tools.com/tools/annotation.html
and it will give you annotated pinyin, which will help you see if you have what you generally want to say.
