A brilliant writer, co-creator of DS9, and from all accounts a genuinely nice guy.

Yeah, I just read this on CNN. Thinking of myself here, but I wonder if this will affect Dead Zone? Sure hope not...

He will definitely be missed by burgeoning television writers. He was just about the only guy in the industry who read unagented scripts. He found many a new writer with undiscovered talent. Hopefully his son Shawn, who now runs Dead Zone, will continue that practice.

Another sad day. He co-created and executive produced "The Dead Zone" on USA with Anthony Micheal Hall, besides the work he did on Star Trek. If you haven't see the show it might be a good way to honor this man by checking it out.

He's also (according to RHW) responsible for giving "our own" Jane Espenson her big break, along with numerous other writers.

Michael's proteges have had tremendous success. People he trained or discovered are currently major creative forces behind shows like Battlestar Galactica, Medium, Threshold, E-Ring, Wildfire, Dead Zone, and CSI. In the past, they've also contributed to shows like the new Twilight Zone, Dark Angel, Carnivale, Roswell, Enterprise, Andromeda, Smallville, Firefly, the new Outer Limits, Farscape, and many others. His influence on our business will continue for decades to come.
