to me. ... I am sharp enough to get '40s slapstick; but nuances are
lost on me. My friends have to tell me later what happened.
So Mal knowingly rents a shuttle to a companion & takes the attitude
that she is working for The Alliance rather than for her Guild which
is a valid entity within the Alliance. Does he consider her a double
whore?
Book is from the Alliance. Is he working for the A or just for God?
Mal likes to assume that Book wants to preach at him; & Book did
one time re Mrs. Reynolds. That was a surprise, too, since anyone
could see thru Saffron with half an eye.
That could the #2 dumbest thing on Firefly.

Book is just a passenger to start with, and he is told to keep his God to himself.
Mal likes Inara. Their interplay from OoG when she outmaneuvers him to rent the Shuttle and for less than he asked, and why her credentials will help him perform crime, was a dance for him, whether or not he allowed himself to be taken.
But, as friends might joke about how much weight you are gaining, or how much your spouse nags you or doesn't listen to you, etc, Mal uses the absurdity of legal whoring as a metaphor to needle Inara.
Certainly he conjures that sooner or later she will see things his way.
I assumed that practically every exchange between Mal and Inara had multiple meanings.
Remember "I promise to never call you a whore again" when first meeting her?

Surely you are not hinting that Mal calls Inara a whore
& it's his way of flirting?
Very common in movies since "ancient times:" The hero & the heroine
are much attracted. But they spend most of the movie denying it and
sparring or belittling one another. Perhaps Joss is simply giving his
stars the classic treatment.
Anyways, I've always disliked that abrasive way of courting, as to me,
it looks very hurtful and unloving.
