In fact, the two ARE connected. If you support the death penalty, you're supporting the commission of murder. If you oppose the death penalty, you're against murder.
Being "against murder" doesn't mean that you execute murderers. Isn't that doing what murderers do? Kill in cold blood for political and personal ends?
The funny thing is, the death penalty is something I've changed my mind about .... twice! I grew up being against the death penalty because that was the household norm. Then, I got the idea of vengeance, and for a decade or so I supported the death penalty. But on further reflection, I see that it's just inconsistent with my other morals. Mistakes are made, innocent people are murdered (by the state) and the funny thing is... it doesn't even work to reduce crime.
