Don't know how to link it, but in the Blue Sun Room, under romance fiction, near the bottom, are three: If all the world, by Philomel (early, and my fav), Where the truth was, and The Heart of Her, both by Sarahetc (them in love, Wash proposing, respectively). I liked it, quite a bit.

I always imagined that Zoe fell for Wash because he made her laugh. I see Zoe as having come up hard, born into a poor family and having to scratch and claw out an existance. I think this life made her tough, almost callous to the world around her.
Along comes Wash, and even though there is "something about him that bothers her", he makes her laugh, something she has been in desperate need of for years. She finds herself relaxing around him and she starts to feel again. Naturally she falls in love w/ him and they marry.

Quote:Go find Sarahetc on the visitors list in Community and check out her fan fics. That girl wrote what I consider some of the best work on this event, and wonderfully at that.

She never did write that difinitive eyes meeting eyes moment specifically, but she did some damn fine stuff.

I thought it was obvious that it was Wash's mustache that bothered Zoe when they first met.
One day he shaved, and the rest was history.

In my ongoing fic, "Blue Sue Job", Wash appeals to Zoe because he's like Mal--like Mal was before he got all dark and gloomy, the cheerful, kinda goofy-humor guy we see in the flashbacks. Takes Zoe a while to actually realize that's why she likes Wash, of course.
I also explain (my explanation) for Book's ident card...

As far as Wash "bothering" Zoe the first time they met, it doesn't suprise me. Besides the shirt and the moustache, he was obviously oogling Zoe.
I have wondered myself "How'd THAT happen?" I subscribe to the view others have mentioned -- Zoe was very down, and Wash gave her some joy back in life.

Holy wow! Thanks for all the props. Once upon a time, I looked into Channain's heart and saw that it was full of beer and red lipstick and I knew that we were soul mates.
Also read anything (in Firefly) by Philomel, like "Pieces" and "If All the World." "Pieces" is a War Stories post-ep, but these things have a way of shedding light on the past. I don't know of anyone who is schmoopy about Wash/Zoe who didn't do a War Stories post-ep. And Philomel's is superb and so beautiful.
Defender82 has written some interesting stories about Wash and Zoe, often in Mal's shadow, and they are (or were) archived in the Blue Sun Room. You'll have to search back some, but not as far back as Philomel.
I think something that no one has bothered to mention yet is also this: opposites attract. We never really get to learn much about them except the glaring up front stuff. She's a war survivor, badass and stoic. He's the goofy pilot with the shirts and the dinosaurs. But all cliches have a nugget of truth. My vision of them has Zoe moving to Wash for many reasons, but the primary one being that he is happy and that's what she wants. Unlike Mal, who despite his better intentions, keeps fighting the war, she's made up her mind to move on. Wash isn't a tool or a stepping stone-- he's a guide.

He has gray eyelashes, and Zoe liked that. She never knew anyone in his age group with gray eyelashes. Also he smells good and she likes that, too. And at Flight School, his nickname was Mortadella Man, and he does not eat Italian food. Yes, she likes that, too.
As for why HE married her, well, she's hot, she wanted HIM, and SHE smells good too.

I think the opposites attract angle works. Plus she seems to get turned on when he does really cool pilot stuff.

What I really appreciate about Wash and Zoe is not only how their opposites attract (most of the married couple I know are like that) but also how you can actually *see* them together.
It could have easily felt so ackward and forced. I'm just shuddering thinking about if someone other than Joss had gotten their hands on them.
Moving on, I love them especially in the scene in OMR when Zoe calls everyone to the cargo bay. There's a little bit of devilment in her. You can also see glimpses of it when Wash makes jokes.
I just love Zoe and Wash. Lots of love to Channain for posting wonderful links on how to find the stories, and Sarahetc for writing them so brilliantly.
Y'all keep us flying.
