First ever album or CD? Well, it was long before CD technology existed. I still have the album, which is KISS Alive II from 1977. Got it around Christmas of '77. I was all of 8 yrs old and thought KISS was the coolest band ever.

First LP: Boston - Don't Look Back

First CD: Dire Straits - Making Movies

One day when my daughters were 3 or 4 they were going through one of the closets and found my old LP's. I pulled one out of its sleeve to show them and one said "Ooo, a big CD!"

The first record I ever bought was a Cleveland Symphony recording of Beethoven's 3rd Symphony with Leonard Much conducting. It was a special record that supported the new "stereo" format while still being playable on existing mono machines.

I came to rock and roll late in life . I recently came across a bin at "Good Will" that had all the old Hendrix recordings in really good shape. My HiFi still has a turntable input!

I think it must have been Neil Diamond Live Yes, I'm serious. One sister brain washed me to Star Trek, the other to Neil Diamond.

Feeling much better, now. A little Evanescence or Mozart therapy depending on the mood and the daily mind-altering drug (caffeine) have set me straight.

Hmm.

The first 45 I ever bought (I was 12, I think) was You by Rita Coolidge. I still have it, though I haven't listened to it in years. Still like the song though. Might have to see if that one is out there on CD or music download somewhere...

I can't recall the first album or tape I ever bought - which is weird - because I usually remember such odd stuff.

The first CD I bought was Alan Parsons Project greatest hits (forget the actual name of the CD) so I could hear Lucifer really clear (as opposed to hissy or scratched up from tape or record)

"Rock and Roll Over" by Kiss was the first lp that I picked out myself. I think I had purchased with my allowance 45s of the songs "Convoy" and "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron" before that.

Prior to these were records my parents picked out for me ("Free to Be You and Me", "Puff the Magic Dragon", etc.)

I don't have any Kiss records anymore. That is an easy band to grow out of, thank god. After Kiss I went through a prolonged Beatles phase. I still have all of those lps.

All of the above took place before I was 13 years old.

I think I was 11. It was a 45. Crimson and Clover.

Thanks for all your input guys. This has been fun so far!

It doesn't matter about being embarrassed. There are always albums and singles that we first buy (or are already part of our collection) that we wish we hadn't bought. There are a few I can think of..

What matters is that we bothered to take an interest in music in the first place. It doesn't matter if it's a cheesy pop act or soundtrack from a movie or tv show. It's a strong influence in our day to day lives and things would probably be totally different for us if we never listened to anything at all.
