I thought I'd start a music themed thread.

Do any Browncoats remember the first LP record, cassette or cd single (albums are also welcome) that they bought? Do they still like them today?

It would be great to see the diversity this creates.

The first vinyl single that I ever bought was "Rhythm is a dancer" by Snap!

(A 1992 dance track that caused controversy at the time with the lyrics: 'I'm serious as cancer when I say rhythm is a dancer.')

The track featured a few verses of rap with the above lyrics and it had one of the moodiest intros and base lines to a song I'd ever heard.

I think it still holds up pretty well today...

Hi!

I'm old so bear with me: The LPs (albums/vinyl/whatever you want to call them) of Nazareth "Hair of the Dog" and Queen "Night at the Opera" were my firsts. And yeah, I still listen to them. When I'm in my car (on cd obviously). Alone. Then I hide them under my Metallica and Linkin Park discs.

The first cassette I purchased was a compilation of Glenn Miller Orchestra songs (way before my time - digressive story on how I got into them). The first LP that I purchased was the Stray Cats, "Built for Speed" (which was new at the time). I still like both groups but haven't listened to either of those albums in years. I had a decent vinyl collection of 50s and 60s motown/rock before I bought my first CD player, but I donated all those albums to my brother to supplement his 70s and 80s disco/funk/old school vinyl collection that he uses when he DJs.

The first CD I ever bought...way back in '94 was "Revenge of the Goldfish" by Inspiral Carpets. Still own it!

OK, I'm old, too. My first cassette tape was Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" and my first vinyl LP (I never bought singles) was The Beatles' "Yesterday... and Today". Unfortunately, I wasn't one of the lucky few who got the original collector's item cover.

I sort of outgrew Black Sabbath, but I still love the Beatles' album. It's kind of surprising though, when I'm watching college football, I notice many marching bands still play "Iron Man" from the "Paranoid" album.

Iron Man is one of my favorite songs, but only because my older brothers used it to scar me for life (long story). I can't even remember the first LP I bought, but it might have been KISS Rock n' Roll All Over. I think that was the title. Obviously, I don't still own it, nor do I still like KISS, except when I'm drunk and with my friend, who still bangs to heavy metal.

As an aside, for those who like Iron Man, do a search for Iron Man on iTunes sometime. It's shocking how many bands have covered that tune, and the variations. There's a loung version, an all-piano version, a mellow version by the Cardigans (think), a girlie-pop version by someone who sounds like all the girlie-pop singers on the radio these days, &c. Crazy.

The first album I got, I went in together with my brother and we bought "Meet the Beatles" (back in the early to mid 60's). I think my brother may still have it if his kids resisted the urge to use it as a frisbee when they were growing up.

Prior to that, I had bought some 45's of the Beatles and the Dave Clark 5... but I don't remember which songs.

The first album I bought entirely on my own nickel was called something like "The Romantic Strings of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra," conducted by Eugene Ormandy (mid to late 60's). I was always a sucker for Borodin's "Nocturne" and Barber's "Adagio for Strings."

First single (I was really young then, honest, still at primary school) "Flowers in the Rain", was it the Move? The guy who went on to form Wizzard anyway.
First album "Deep Purple in Rock" about 1972 I think. Have you seen how large Ian Gillan is these days? Him and me both I guess.

(Latest CD Mitch Benn with "Dr. Who Girl" on it, a bit 70s too)

The first vinyl I ever bought was 'Trilogy' by Emerson, Lake and Palmer - at a garage sale in 1976. The first vinyl I bought brand new was 'Blue For You' by Status Quo. I still have both!
