Last week on Amazing Race, one couple who had already missed about 6 or 7 trains, and was about 5 trains behind the leaders, were booked for a bullet train and were taking a selfie with the train in their background when it took off, without them on it.
Yes, they were eliminated by the end of the day.

Seems you're missing the point.

They're in the physical vicinity of their friends, but are they really WITH them ?

I think Einstein may have secretly figured out time travel. Or he had an actual Palaintiri, or seeing-stone.
