I always took that comment as being one of Joss' trademark sarcastic remarks, and not as serious as the content reads on paper.
'Course if he *did* mean it, there is always the possibility that he was referring to Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase on Buffy/Angel) who was also on both shows for 7 years.
It was always understood that the 7 year comment was directed at the diva, SMG. The same SMG who could not show up for the BtVS wrap party. Talk about ungrateful.
