Hellooo,

I just watched Out of Gas again, and the ending of it made me think it could've worked as a final episode. When Mal says something along the lines of: "You'll all be here when I wake up?", made me think maybe he indeed is dreaming in that scene, as he never pushed the button to call back the shuttles, the others never came back to the ship really. One could imagine Mal died there and the fate of the others was unknown, as such it could have worked as a grim ending for the series if seen as chronologically at the end(I'm not counting the movie into canon).

Wanted to share these thoughts and see if anyone had the same idea. :)

yep...thought crossed my mind when I first saw it as well...everyone all smiles, etc...but in reality..he's gone on to Firefly heaven...and Lord knows, Josh would do something shitty like that (lol)

Sounds about right...only, with Joss, as everyone filed out of the med room, a wry, smiling Niska would stroll in, secretly, and deliver some heart stopping quip, and then ... fade to black.

When Joss called Mal to offer to reprise the role of Mal in Serenity, Mal asked about the last line in the script. Joss reportedly said "It's too bad Mal died in the first scene" or similar. Your concept could have worked in Joss world.
But I liked OoG right where it was, in the intended sequence. His scar shows in War Stories.

I always thought The Message would have made a nice final episode. Two reasons:

1) This from IMDB: By the time this episode was shot the cast and crew knew that the show would be canceled. When Greg Edmonson wrote the music for the funeral scene at the end, he told Joss Whedon that he wasn't saying good bye to the character Tracey, he was saying good bye to the show.

2) The look on Mal's face in the final shot, kinda say's it all in regards to the episode itself and the cancelation:

I have always found The Message the best final episode. That it was the last scripted and shot episode merely reinforced my attitude.

Kaylee taking Simon's hand... the warmth of the characters and the show, in contrast of the death and the cold of the final scene. Great stuff.

None of the other episodes follow that well.
