What? Why would they "cross paths"? You mean the technicians, right? They were prohibited from crossing into deadly restricted zones, only this tech was the one who didn't obey rules, which was why he was due for refurbishment or whatever they called it.
Or were you talking about the crewmates from the ship they piloted?

Spoiler alert: I thought it was more "Total Recall" than Matrix. There seemed a lot of theater viewers who didn't unsterstand it, couldn't explain it to each other, and were thankful that I was able to explain it to them. I chalk that up to the ADHD of cell-kiddies.

OK, I didn't see this post. You should watch it completely sometime, like the $1 redbox. All of the above questions were answered, but paying attention was required. I thought it the most attention-needed film since Inception - so try figuring out Inception without watching all the scenes.

So I got it recently at the discount price. On BR, so cannot use zoom functions on player.

I still like it, figured I still would on rewatch. But got to check some details.

Continuity problems. Sure the Moon is destroyed, but why is it always over Tower 49? It never moves, day, night, for all the days of the film.
And when Jack as Tech 49 flying Bubbleship 52 visits Tower 52, Vika 52 talks to him, keeps glancing at his outfit right where the 49 insignia is located, but never mentions it. Does Vika 52 understand he is Tech49 - does not seem likely, she isn't that smart. Maybe the story should have had him switch tops with Tech52, but that never happened and he is still showing 49 on his top while in Tower 52.

The rest of the above complaints seem invalid. I might reply to them following this post.

I did wonder about the Latitude/longitude data given in the film.
The lat and long seem to be switched. Although the intro to the film shows Pentagon, Washington Monument, U.S. Capitol sites, the scenes in the story show Statue of Liberty, NYC Library, a great falls which might be Niagara, Empire State Building. The given graticules of 41 long and -73 lat would be Columbia, but 41 Lat and 73 long gets us to New York. Similarly reversing 29 long, -82 lat gives us Florida for 29 lat, -82 long. Reversing the given 43 long, 73 lat gives us Vermont for 43 lat, 73 long.

Didn't see this addressed in the film. Perhaps it is all B.S. fed to them by Tet, and has no relation to today's lat/long system. Anybody hear differently?


I did enjoy the extras on the DVD. Cool that they actually built the Bubbleship, and took it with them on the locations for filming. And how they minimized the CGI with all the background for the Tower scenes was cool.
Why they deleted the scene in the library with the Book of World Records I'm not sure - maybe they thought it would confuse the kiddies who don't know what a book is.

After recently watching Continuum, I noticed Oblivion is set in 2077, the same time Continuum comes back in time from.


1. Earlier in thread, AuRaptor mentions the Jack Harpers not meeting each other. A reply already posted, but this was because every Tech was prohibited from crossing into the RADIATION ZONES or he would DIE. Tech 49 did so only after Freeman's character dared him to do so, and the drones tried to kill him for doing so.

2. I did not consider it to be all that bleak - and it had far more sun, daylight and color than most dystopian flicks. Not nearly as bleak as A Boy and His Dog, it seemed.

3. Question of why the clones were not programmed to stay in their sector. For about 60 years they apparently did, or maybe it took Tet a few years to work out the kinks. But cloning a human apparently creates problems like mental curiosity and freedom of thought. Which would be why the mandatory 5-year Mind Wipes for security are needed (explained to the clones as precaution against the scavs getting any info from them, should they be captured.) So the Clone/reboot cycle only lasts about 5 years safely, after which time the clones get unruly and defy their programming. Pesky humans. Team 49 was in their last 2 weeks prior to getting wiped again, but they were promised an end to their tour, being able to rejoin the rest of the humans on Titan. Certainly the standard ruse for every Team due for reboot/reprogramming.

4. Apparently Tet's method of cloning retains some memories of the original Jack Harper. But for the past 50-60 years, there have apparently been about 10-12 cycles of clones replaced, multiplied by the number of Teams across the globe. Likely thousands of clones have gone before without having this problem, but the influence of Freeman's character set it off.

Oblivion isn't really science fiction. It is fantasy. That's why the physics of Oblivion is bent out of shape. But bent with a purpose: to give the scenery extreme contrast to ordinary reality.

It is bullshit even if you don't have the script's explanation. Once deuterium is removed from seawater, you are left with, wait for it, . . . seawater. Lots and lots of seawater. The water doesn't go away from Earth or leave, disintegrate, beam out, vanish, whatever. But the screenplay is set in a desert, so the Director makes Earth a desert that will have this green and watered contrast:

Another item I noticed in cinema: why didn't we get to see the scene where Jack finds/sees his own lifepod/sleeppod "J Harper"? Clearly implied, but we don't get to see the scene. Was it at Oddessy crash site? Wouldn't Julie have shown it to him? Or was it taken by Mitch's crew to the hideout, and then when they grabbed Julie & Jack, or later?

What you see is the Tet, not the Moon. It's visible from the different sectors when Earth's rotation brings it within communication range.

The '49 insignia' is obscured by dirt and a folded flap when Vika 52 is talking to him. She doesn't see the number clearly. Also, Tower 52 is similar but different than Tower 49, and so are its Jack and Vika. The clones are programmed with just enough minimum intelligence to do their daily jobs and live as happy content couples. They don't have inquisitive minds. That's what makes Jack 49 different and special.

Incorrect. Tet is not spherical in shape. Moon is mostly like our current moon, but with impact debris trail shot out of the 7 o'clock angle in each view of it, in the background sky of every scene of Tower.

Nope. The rifle sling runs across the number patch, obscuring the 4 but not the right half of 9, which looks nothing like the right half of 2 would look like.
Tower 52, Jack 52 and Voka 52 are clones of 49, except different color scheme.
