Finally saw it yesterday. Yes, it's good, it's fun, but not great. I may or may not review it for my site since it was ultimately unsatisfying for me. I long for more serious SF films, since what we've been getting is no different than your typical action film dressed up with more CGI and in a fantastical setting.

Re serious sci-fi: yeah, I like that too, though I think it's harder to carry off. My love of sci-fi that is scientifically interesting is part of why I had a hard time adjusting to this movie. But if you accept it as just a fun escapist ride, it's hard to find fault with it.

As for "serious" things to appreciate in GotG, I think the production value (CGI) and the tightness of the script are pretty damned amazing. Clear example: the prison.

(minor spoiler warning)

It went from checking into prison through exposition/team forming in prison to prison break in moments. Grok grabbing the battery to start the break was an ingenious and amusing and seamless way to keep the plot moving. This movie had very few dead spots, yet managed to not become a mind-numbing ***every moment is the climax!!!*** snoozefest like Armeggedon. (I could do nothing but eyeroll through half of that. May not have helped that I saw it with petroleum drilling engineers who scoffed at Bruce's choose of drill bit.)

Okay kiddies, here it is:

I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!!!

Sure, it's not your more serious sci-fi fare, but.........WHO CARES!
It was not sold as Star Wars or Star Trek, but a fun ride through space, a poor man's Serenity, a comic book jaunt worthy of the Avengers-like praise it's been receiving.

I really like the approach taken by the director, save one small thing (you knew it was coming) the soundtrack. Mind you, I loved the song selections, but the placement could have been better. That's it! Otherwise, perfection....as far as this type of movie goes. I think I get where you gave the criticism of it being "messy."

It had a frenetic pace and very little lull in the action, but it definitely had a comic book feel to it, even down to the assembly of the crew. It never took itself seriously, and just when you thought it would, something totally juicy and Firefly-like would happen.

But I loved it and will go to see it again, mainly because I missed some of the dialogue (a combination of too much laughter in the theater and poor sound system). I caught it in 3D - quite by mistake, but it wasn't a complete disaster.

Loved - First of all, the intro was a perfect set up that paid off later. Then "Star Lord" dancing to Come and Get Your Love on the deserted planet where he found the Orb. That set the Silliness Tone right from the start, Chris Pratt was cast perfectly, actually all were perfectly cast, as Peter Quill. Zoe Saldana as Gamora (reminded me of Zoe Wash) perfect as the love interest. Even Bautista as Drak the Destroyer got into the act.
But my favorites were Rocket and, even more so, Groot (who had little to say but turned out to be the most brilliant use of CGI ever in sci-fi).

The script - tight, snappy and entertaining. We knew, going in that Quill would be a Captain Tightpants replica. But the others..........the others, especially Drak, caught me off guard, and I love that about a movie. Give me something I don't expect. That line about something going over his head was comic genius. Rocket had no filter and sick sense of humor. But Groot had some of the more memorable moments in the movie. Here was this enforcer who had a heart of gold, a big teddy bear. We are Groot! Just the right amount of emotion without being sappy (it reminded me of Jayne looking into the infirmary while Kaylee was being attended to by Simon).

There's so much more, but you get the gist. Messy, sure.......but movies are many things; some entertain, some make you think, some send a message, some make you laugh and still others amaze.

Was it Star Wars, no (by the way, I love the pop culture references sprinkled throughout), was it Avengers (Lee Pace wasn't Tom Hiddleston) close, but no. Was it Serenity, lightly flavored, but no.

Still though, there was a hint of those movies lurking about in the background. But I dare say, this is a hodgepodge of those classics and none the worse for the wear. I think Ebert himself would have loved this mess.
