okay, another angel post (from season 5):

Select to view spoiler:

was watching the episode where angel is turned into a puppet. the only song that you really get to hear from smile time is about being who you are and having self confidence. the writers obviously made that the theme of the whole show. look at what happens. angel comes to terms with who he is now and begins to leave some of his past behind him. he says to nina:

"i've spent so much time worrying about the past and the future and my very complicated life... it's been a while since i looked up and
really saw what was going on around me"

in the end, he pushes forward and begins to embrace what nina could be for him. of course, nina as well, has learned to live with the werewolf side of her life. she has almost gotten accustomed to it (such as one can). finally, we see gunn, still trying to deny who he really is by asking (and apparently making a deal) to retain the legal knowledge he had implanted in his brain.

anyway, i thought it was interesting.

It was a great episode. I hate to think what any other tv show would have done with a premise like that ep. It probably would have been a disaster.

I don't think they quite handled it perfectly, but it was close. There were some really nice moments in S5, it's just a shame there wasn't the same sense of consistency that ran through seasons 1 to 3.

Yeah, I agree S5 was inconsistent. But they picked it up in the last third of the season. And even though Smile Time was not perfect (few tv eps are), I can't imagine any other show doing better.

Smile Time may not have been perfect - how do you measure "perfect" in such an incredibly subjective medium, anyway? However, to me, it was the most inventive, unique, and scathing satire of the tv industry that I can remember seeing - ever! In fact, after the cancellation was announced by the WB, I wondered whether that episode didn't have something to do with it. Assuming that Joss's bosses at the WB had the brains to understand the show (a questionable assumption, at best), they might not have taken to being portrayed as evil, manipulative puppets (masters).

I know it's just supposition on my part, but I think that episode just may have had something to do with the cancellation of the show. Then again, maybe not. Maybe it was just the usual money issues.

i think the reason that this episode struck me is that i had my own sort of realization about being who you are and not trying to hide what makes you the person that you are recently. it has made me a happier person. i guess seeing that episode just resonated with me.

I sincerely doubt that.

I think this episode resonated with me because of: 1. The "wee little puppet man" comment by Spike; 2. when we see Angel's stuffing coming out after he's been mauled by WerewolfChick; and 3. Angel getting his game face on in puppet mode. That had to be one of the best scenes ever.

And Est, to add some enjoyment to the eps you've seen, check out Television Without Pity.com, and the episode recaps. They are really funny and often bring up a lot of interesting stuff that many people (me included) missed the first time around watching.

I doubt it, too. As I said in the rest of my post, that would depend on the WB executives understanding that the episode was about them - they probably didn't, but it is a remote possibility.

that is a good one. the classic joss whedon shot where he has the main players moving towards the camera in slow motion. LOVED that with the puppet when you can see fred, flanked by gunn and wes and then the camera has to pan down to see "angel". HILARIOUS. i would LOVE an angel plush doll. that would be great.
