Not uncommon in the entertainment industry, especially a) with a change in leadership, b) with a new programming approach, and c) with a show that will likely cost more than it will rake in. All three applied here. As a recent (and rather prominent) example, consider HOW I MET YOUR FATHER, which was one of the earliest greenlit shows of the new season, but apparently became kryptonite after the finale of HIMYM.

Which network did this to Alligator Alley or Beach, whatever that Nathan Fillion show was?

The latter scripts looked pretty lame, it would have been awful for all involved if it had started strong and went to hell latter...like "Heros"...and "Lost".

What goes on in the Fox members' heads: Nothing. And it is amazing what nothing can do to a show.
