A villain in the real world would reveal nothing, but that goes against the traditions & techniques of the entertainment industry.

What would be the point in hiding it anymore? Alliance got their evidence, made their raid, killed a bunch of people and there's not enough resistance left to muddle through without nearly the same manpower or support. Ruse over, damage done, point made, except for the scapegoat they set up they all go home and eat cake tonight.

They managed to round up and kill off a lot of people who were political dissenters off-screen by using their inclinations against them, which was the whole point.

It's as if they're more concerned about the danger posed by a LOT of political dissenters than the presence of a guy whose military history and tactical ability has been greatly exaggerated. How shocking.

Besides you keep assuming that any of this is supposed to be smart. No, it's supposed to be real. Our government does stupid shit like funding dangerous subversive groups just to get incriminating evidence on them all the time. Sometimes they even help them plan attacks.

Yes, they managed to kill some people. They also managed to have a secrete facility broken into and one of the girls taken. They also managed to get one of their officers taken. That's the trap that failed. Hell, one other ship in orbit could have blow Sernity to hell when it came to the rescue.

Governments in the real world don't use secret programs and facilities as bait let alone leave then so undefended that a small group can break in.

I do not fear God, I fear the ignorance of man.

It's arguably the less important one.

They took one student who is unlikely to be friendly when she wakes up and one Alliance officer with apparently delusions of grandeur. They meanwhile left another dozen or so students apparently in Alliance custody.

It's the man behind the man in this case that's important - since this guy has appeared in other comics on Serenity's tail, it stands to reason he was the one in charge of bringing them in, and was only a small part of a larger sting operation that failed.

Camden 28.

Not nearly on the order of encouraging them to go after a secret super soldier program, but at the same time, they probably realized that other academy students would be irresistible bait for River Tam. Know thy enemy and all that.

Was this a Taliban-like situation where the Resistance/Taliban

You're thinking of Al Qaeda and the Pakistani ISI. The Taliban didn't have much to do with US and arguably before we forced them together the mujahideen and the Taliban had been struggling for control over Afghanistan up to 1996.

. . . Hmm. Maybe that's the third power?

I say YES to that!

Governing the 21st century is complicated and it is all on one planet. The 26th century, spread out on many planets, will be complicated.

There will be future equivalents to H-bomb owning France and Russian with even bigger weapons than today. The Verse has cold, dead planets that were terraformed to life. There will be a quick way to undo terraforming and kill a planet. The central Alliance won't be able to force new laws on future France and future Russia.

As for the Academy being poorly guarded. There is a strong suspicion that it is not actually a government project but a part of the Blue Sun commercial conglomerate (SuperSykiks'R'Us?). Hmm. Maybe that's the third power?

I like the idea of blue sun being a third party. maybe if they do another series decide to continue it.
also they haven't really popped up much in this series

Technically, that's what happened to Shadow, and they also bombarded Hera enough that it began to effect the climate.

So not only did that already happen, but it served to put the worlds of the Independents firmly under the thumb of the Alliance.

However, I agree. There probably are factions out there.

If factions includes nations, I agree. How about a planet that is a nation like France? It has a unique culture, a widely used language, and, my favorite, it has H-bombs.

France gets along in the EU, UN, NATO, but those French nukes have a purpose that is not discussed often enough. The "France" planet in the Verse (Beaumonde sounds French to me) could be a member of the Alliance, but there are limits to how far the central planets can push the "France" planet.

In the Verse there would be something more destructive than France's H-bombs. Ordinary physics says that raising the gravity on a planet to one Earth normal requires a tremendous amount of energy. Imaginary physics says artificial gravity energy can be released, breaking a planet. Every planet with artificial gravity is a planet-sized bomb, which explains why the Alliance is so obsessed -- Sihnon is worried about exploding.

The only way for Sihnon to feel safe is controlling other planets. Does that remind anyone of the treaties to control nukes on Earth and the USA's hostility toward North Korea? Anybody remember that the USA couldn't stop Pakistan and India from making atom bombs? The USA couldn't stop France from getting the H-bomb, either.

I like the whole series so far. Hopefully we get another but from the email posts at the end I doubt anything soon.
