A few Browncoats from NC are organizing support for a 3-episode Firefly miniseries! It looks to be a serious production, something the fans can all stand behind and be proud of. It'll be released for free once it's done, but right now these guys need donations to make the dream a reality.

"Firefly:Origins is a 3-part miniseries to be released for free on Youtube documenting the adventures of a young Malcolm Reynolds, as he finds himself drawn into the war for independence against the Alliance. It takes place in the early years of the Unification War, over a decade before Firefly takes place."
"This project will only be funded if at least $75,000 is pledged by Sun, May 18 2014 11:01 PM CDT."

It doesn't matter if they release it for free. FOX still has the rights to the title "Firefly" and all related characters. If they won't let individuals make and sell Jayne hats, what makes you think they will allow any filmed production that uses protected intellectual properties?

For the same reason we're allowed to make fanfiction: it's totally free. We have fun and get something out of it, and if anything Fox benefits from renewing love for their show.

So what we've seen is that it CAN be done! I've actually been able to help work on the script behind this planned miniseries, and it's absolutely what we've been waiting for. For instance, in the first episode we get
1) How Mal first got his browncoat
2) Hilarious Firefly-style dialogue
3) An opening fight scene sequenced to match the Serenity theme
and then as the story continues in other episodes, more cool new things like bounty hunters, Mal's hometown, Alliance cruisers, attempted planetary genocide, high-speed missile chases (and crashes), massive amounts of destruction (both CGI and actual explosives), and a Firefly. If any of those things appeal to you...help make it happen. With David West on board to direct, what we're going to get is exactly what we've wanted.

Only 1934 people have watched the firefly fan video Bellflower, Part One on youtube.
Bellflower, Part Two has been seen by 945.
Watch the video to become a member of a very select group.
To keep it in prospective, in two days 7,055 people have seen Lego Serenity time-lapse build.

Something is wrong here. The Captim is a woman and kaylee is a guy. Egads!

The numbers for Origins don't look too promising. As for Bellflower, I really enjoyed those two episodes and was looking forward to a third, but their site seems a bit scarce on any new updates:

I think Origins is asking for too much relative to what they have proven they can do.
If you look at the round up of Firefly fan films here
http://fireflydvd.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4887
I can tell you that none of them ever received $75,000 in seed money based on nothing but a promise.
Browncoats: Independence War already had a ton of film in the can
(using blank firing weapons and some major props like real armored vehicles)
when they launched their Kickstarter campaign.

They raised $21,000.
If the Origins folks want a shot, I think they need to make substantial progress on a volunteer level, to prove that they can produce a film effort deserving of fan support. If the actors and scripts are substandard, all the money in the world won't elevate the project.
So, my suggestion is put a few short character sketches out there on video,
and if the Firefly fan community finds the effort intriguing and worthy,
Origins will likely garner some support
(tho' I still doubt $75,000 worth........)
