something i never caught before:

so in trash jayne and simon are discussing ysb's antagonistic characteristics. river blurts out that “she” is a liar and that no good will come of “her”. i had assumed that she was contributing to the conversation about ysb. jayne then makes a negative comment about women and river fires back that jayne is a girl’s name which i had assumed was just snappy comeback to jayne’s insult. but if you look at the expressions exchanged between characters, i now think that the writers did another awesome river has a crazytime-yet-powerfully-insightful moment as she senses jayne sold them out. she is really talking about jayne in the first part of the conversation and her “jayne is a girl’s name” is her way of saying “i know what you did and i was talking about you dumbass!”.

maybe folks already caught this and im just late to the party... but if you didnt, rewatch the scene knowing that jayne gets "caught" later and it plays even better into river's "imma bat-shit crazy mind readin' genius" character

edit - actually insinuation is probably a better word for the title than innuendo (what can i say, im a c english student)

Huh.

That's a really good catch and probably correct. Or in the very least River was speaking in layers about both Jayne and Saffron.

Seems she and Jayne and Simon come to an accord by the end of the episode. but this is an ongoing subplot in that episode.

I think it's a case of double meanings. I think River means BOTH Saffron and Jayne, and she's fully aware of the ambiguity, and playing with it. I think she enjoys messing with people, and does it even in serious situations.

On a related note, did you notice that everyone aboard Serenity has a personal epithet to refer to Saffron, either in Our Mrs Reynolds or Trash or both episodes? River's epithet for Saffron is "a liar and a thief." The thief theme of this is further developed in the cut scene from Our Mrs Reynolds.
